Purdue Sweeps Minnesota In Big Ten Homecoming

April 9, 2011

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Grabbing its 10th win of the season, the Purdue women's tennis team ‎swept the Gophers of Minnesota (5-12, 1-4) on Saturday at the Schwartz Tennis Center.

Purdue ‎enjoyed home court advantage for the first time in five matches, including four Big Ten ‎Conference duals on the road. The Boilermakers (10-6, 4-2) are 7-1 at home, having only fallen ‎to then-No. 26 South Carolina. ‎

It was also a day of tenth wins for two doubles teams and two Boilermakers in dual-match ‎singles. ‎

At No. 3 doubles, Bhavani Tirumurti and Imogen Golder gained a strong 4-0 lead over Doron ‎Muravnik and Magdalena Wiecha and never let up, taking the match 8-4 for their tenth win of ‎the season. No. 38 doubles team, Jennifer Rabot and Mara Schmidt were challenged early at 4-4 ‎in the top doubles slot by Alessandra Ferrazzi and Natallia Pintusava. The Boilermakers stayed ‎tough and broke their counterparts at 6-5, giving them the advantage they needed to clinch the ‎doubles point for Purdue with an 8-5 win and their tenth victory. ‎

The Old Gold and Black moved into singles with the 1-0 tally and remained in control. First to ‎claimed another Purdue point was the Boilermakers' singles leader, sophomore Imogen Golder. ‎The Purdue netter fought Muravnik in the first set 3-3 near the end, but Golder got the upper ‎hand and took the first 6-3. The second frame was tight as well grinding to a 4-all halt when the ‎Boilermaker broke Muravnik and closed it out 6-3, 6-4. The Auckland, New Zealand native is on a ‎‎9-2 singles win streak and 13-5 overall. ‎

Celebrating her tenth season win, Gisella Pere imposed a 6-2, 6-3 score on Spilca for a 3-0 run at ‎No. 6 and Purdue's third overall point. ‎

Deciding the match for the Old Gold and Black at No. 4, junior Anna Dushkina forced a 6-3 first ‎set on Yuliana Umanets. In set No. 2, Dushkina seized a 4-0 lead and finished Umanets 6-3, 6-4 ‎for her third clinching match. ‎

Junior Rabot faced a tough competitor in 56th-ranked Natallia Pintusava at the top singles spot. ‎The two netters stayed aggressive in the first set until Rabot turned the tide with a break at 5-3 ‎and took set No. 1 6-4. The second frame was just as tough with draws at 3-all, 4-all and 5-all. ‎Rabot jumped on the final game, shutting out Pintusava 6-4, 7-5. ‎

Adding to the Purdue point total was Mara Schmidt with a 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), (10-8) battle with Alexa ‎Palen. Schmidt has had a 3-0 win streak since moving to No. 3. ‎

For the sweeping point over Minnesota, senior Bhavani Tirumurti snatched her tenth win of the ‎season over Ferrazzi 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 with her second win since movnig to the No. 2 singles court. ‎

‎"I thought today was one of our best matches of the year," said head coach Laura Glitz. "Across ‎the board every player stepped up and did what they needed to do to win. If we do the same ‎thing tomorrow, we will get the result we want."

On Sunday the Boilermakers are again challenged at home when the Wisconsin Badgers come to ‎the Schwartz Tennis Center for a noon ET dual-match.‎

There is no admission to the Schwartz Tennis Center. Free pizza will be offered to all Purdue ‎women's tennis fans. Live results can be found at purduesports.com.
