IOWA CITY, Iowa - The No. 58 Purdue women's tennis team grabbed its third 4-3 win of Big Ten Conference action on Sunday besting the Iowa Hawkeyes (5-10, 2-2) in Iowa City. The Boilermakers have two other conference team by the same score, then-No. 47 Indiana and then-No. 52 Michigan State.
The Old Gold and Black (9-6, 3-2) claimed the crucial doubles point on two courts for the third time this season and the first time in their Big Ten slate.
Gisella Pere and Anna Dushkina blanked Alexis Dorr and Christina Harazin 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. To clinch the doubles point in the top doubles spot No. 38 team Jennifer Rabot and Mara Schmidt decisively beat No. 46 pair Sonja Molnar and Jessica Young 8-3.
For Purdue's second overall point, Golder stole a 6-4 first set from Harazin and a 6-0 set No. 2 for the win. Schmidt started her match against Poggensee-Wei with a 4-3 lead and closed set No. 1 6-3. She took the second set from the Hawkeye and the win 6-3, 6-2.
Sophomore Pere battled Cassandra Escobar 3-4 in the first set until the Purdue player knabbed the set 7-6. Securing the team triumph for the third time this spring Pere vacated Escobar in the second 7-6, 6-0.
Purdue claimed the match at 4-2 with Dushkina's dual to Dorr still unresolved. The Iowa netter won the frst set 7-5, but Dushkina came back with a 6-1 second frame and looked like she could seize the match, but fell 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 for Iowa's third point.
The Boilermakers return home for first time in three weeks to host Big Ten competitors Minnesota and Wisconsin on Saturday and Sunday both at noon ET at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
