ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Looking to continue a streak started on Saturday against Michigan State (4-3), the Purdue women's tennis team faced tough competitors in the 5th-ranked Michigan Wolverines (13-3, 3-0) on Sunday at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor. The Boilermakers (8-5, 2-1) could not make headway and dropped the road match 7-0.
The Boilermakers see their first defeat in Big Ten Conference play after edging both then-No. 47 Indiana and No. 52 Michigan State 4-3 in both matchups.
Junior Jennifer Rabot pushed the No. 8 player in the nation Denise Muresan at No. 1 singles in the first set leading off with a 6-3 frame win. Muresan responded in the second with a 6-1 set and claimed the win, 6-1 in the third.
Also challenging her Michigan conterpart was sophomore Imogen Golder who fell in the first set to Rika Tatsuno 6-1. Golder netted her way to a 6-4 set No. 2, but Tatsuno was too strong winning set and match 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Goler was joined by Bhavani Tirumurti at No. 3 doubles in a tight 3-2 start to their day against Sam Critser and Michelle Sulahian. The Wolverine duo gained a 5-2 advantage, but the Old Gold ýand Black broke back to pull even 5-all. From there Critser and Sulahain capped it off 8-5 for the Michigan doubles sweep.
Purdue next faces another road weekend challenging Illinois on Saturday at noon ET and Iowa on Sunday, also at noon ET.
