Cook Places Sixth In Platform At USA Diving Winter Nationals

- Purdue's Kara Cook was one of 12 competitors to reach the finals of the 10-meter platform event, settling for a sixth-place finish at the USA Diving Winter National Championships Saturday.

Cook scored 296.30 points on her five-dive list in the finals. Her best dive came in the final round, scoring 71.05 points on a forward 2 ½ somersault one twist pike (5152 B). She posted the second-highest score in the final round but only after her fourth dive of the list produced her lowest score (34.80) of the day.

Thursday, Cook closed the preliminary rounds with a combined score of 595.35 (10 dives) to also place sixth. She scored above 60 points on seven of her 10 dives in the preliminary rounds, highlighted by a 70.40 on her third dive of the quarterfinals, an armstand back two somersault 1 ½ twist free.

Earlier this week at the USA Diving Winter Nationals, Purdue's David Boudia teamed with Nick McCrory of Duke to win the men's synchronized platform. Erin Mertz also finished sixth in the 1-meter springboard. Sunday, Boudia looks to defend his title in the men's 10-meter platform finals. Danny Cox also qualified for the platform finals.

USA Diving Release
Brittany Viola and Harrison Jones won their first national titles with victories on women's 10-meter and men's 3-meter Saturday at the USA Diving Winter National Championships, and Troy Dumais and Kristian Ipsen won the men's synchronized 3-meter title in record-setting fashion.

Viola scored 357.70 points on 10-meter to win her first national title in a meet she was just happy to be competing in. Katie Bell edged Anna James for the silver medal, 347.35-346.10. Jessica Parratto finished fourth with 333.65 points.

In the closest contest of the championships, Jones edged Ipsen by five-hundredths of a point, 479.90-479.85. Ipsen led after four rounds but opened the door in the fifth round when he earned 5s and 6s on his reverse 3 ½ while Jones earned 9s and 9.5s on his front 2 ½ with a twist.
