KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The No. 52 Purdue women's tennis team escaped Western Michigan with a 4-3 victory Friday afternoon.
The Boilermakers took the doubles point for the fourth consecutive match this season, winning on two doubles courts. At No. 2 doubles junior Anna Dushkina and sophomore Gisella Pere blanked Jill Pastunink and Maria Nivia 8-0 just before 68th-ranked team senior Bhavani Tirumurti and sophomore Imogen Golder defeated Maggie Remynse and Miloslava Shustova 8-6.
Extending a five-match streak and taking the first dual-match point on the third court was Tirumurti, easing past Rachel Denny 6-2, 6-2. Schmidt beat Nivia by the same score at No. 2 to take the Boilermakers' third overall point.
Pastunink hit Dushkina with a 6-0 first set in the fourth singles spot, but Dushkina came back with a 7-5 second to even the match. Pastunink turned it on the tiebreaker, claiming the match 6-0, 5-7, 10-6.
On the fifth court, Pere's match would decide it for the Boilermakers. The Guayaquil, Ecuador, native breezed through set No. 1, 6-3 over April Kerr, and followed it up with a 7-5 second for the fourth overall point and the Old Gold and Black win. It marked the fifth straight singles win for Pere.
Purdue takes the weekend off before hosting No. 24 South Carolina and Kentucky on Feb. 12 and 13. Both matches will begin at noon ET at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
