MOREHEAD, Ky. - Purdue baseball pounded out 35 runs on 39 hits Sunday to sweep a doubleheader at Morehead State, winning 18-1 and 17-9, and in the process won three-of-four in the weekend series at hitter-friendly Allen Field.The Boilermakers have posted a winning record in the first two weekends to the open the year with a 5-2 record, their best seven-game start since going 6-1 in 2000.
On a day dominated by the Purdue lineup, Brad Schreiber (2-0) also excelled on the mound. The sophomore right-hander took a no-hitter into the sixth inning en route to picking up his second victory of the season in as many starts. He retired 15 consecutive hitters from the first through sixth innings and finished the day with five strikeouts. Travis Redmon broke up the no-hit bid with a two-out double in the sixth, one of only two hits Schreiber surrendered. Morehead State (1-7) also broke up the shutout in Schreiber's final inning of work.
Cameron Perkins connected for a two-run homer to center field in both games. He finished the weekend 8-for-18 with five extra-base hits and a team-high nine RBIs. The sophomore has hit safely in 11 consecutive games dating back to the final four of 2010.
Barrett Serrato, David Miller, Angelo Cianfrocco and Eric Charles all had five hits Sunday. Cianfrocco hit for the cycle over the course of the series, finishing the four-game set 10-for-16 with four extra-base hits, five RBIs and eight runs scored. Serrato also scored eight times on the weekend thanks to an 8-for-15 showing at the plate. Miller started the final three games of the series at shortstop and also finished the weekend with eight hits.
Joe Haase (1-0) earned the win in game two Sunday, working five innings of four-run ball in his first start as a Boilermaker.
Purdue scored multiple runs in nine of the 16 innings played Sunday, putting up five or more runs in a frame three times. The Boilermakers never trailed after scoring five times in the top of the first inning of game one for the second day in a row.
David Blount started game one at designated hitter and scored after each of first five at-bats, tying a program single-game record for runs scored. Charles doubled in the first two at-bats of the game and also registered a two-run double in the nightcap.
Serrato was productive in each of his first three plate appearances of both games, recording three hits and scoring three times in the first game of the day. In the three consecutive innings in game two, he knocked in Purdue's first run with a sacrifice fly, singled and drove in another run with a base hit.
Miller reached base safely four times in both games, driving in a run in each of his final two at-bats of the day with base hits up the middle. Payton Bieker started game two at catcher and collected an extra-base hit in each of his final two at-bats, hitting rockets into left field for a double and a triple.
The relief work of Pat Gannon and Sean Collins capped a successful weekend for the Purdue bullpen. Gannon backed up Schreiber with three scoreless innings of relief in game one. Collins closed out game two by retiring both batters he faced without a run scoring after entering the game with the bases loaded.
For the weekend, the quartet of Lance Breedlove, Robert Ramer, Collins and Gannon combined for 11 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The Boilermakers return to action Friday when they open a three-game series at Lipscomb. First pitch is Nashville, Tenn., is slated for 5 p.m. (EST).
