MINNEAPOLIS - Purdue's David Boudia closed his Big Ten Conference career in record-setting fashion, winning the platform diving competition to sweep the diving events this week at the Big Ten Championships, which concluded Saturday.
Boudia won the 1-meter Thursday, 3-meter Friday and platform Saturday. His second career sweep of the diving events made him the first men's competitor in the modern era of diving (1988-present) at the Big Ten Championships to accomplish the feat twice in a college career.
Purdue men's swimming and diving finished fifth as a team at the four-day event. Michigan claimed the team championship. Boudia was named the Big Ten Diver of the Championship for the third straight year and Adam Soldati was recognized as the Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year for the fourth time on the men's side.
Boudia won the platform Saturday with a Purdue-record score of 557.90 points. He also established new Big Ten conference and meet records as well as a new pool benchmark at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center. He eclipsed his own records in all four instances.
Boudia scored five perfect 10s on his first dive of the platform finals. He received two additional 10s on his fifth dive. He capped his career at the Big Ten Championships as an eight-time conference champ.
The Purdue divers were once again the top scoring group. Boudia (20 points), Danny Cox (fourth place, 15 points), J.P. Perez (fifth place, 14) and Jimmy Page (fourth in B final, 5 points) accounted for a combined 54 team points in the platform competition. In the three diving events this weekend, the quartet scored 146 points.
Among the Boilermakers' swimmers, Brian Kiel set a new Purdue freshman record in the 200 backstroke (143.93). He finished fifth in the A final of the event, accounting for 14 team points. Eduard Galdeano also established a new program freshman benchmark in the 200 butterfly (146.09), finishing as the runner up in the B final.
Ben Wachtel won the B final of the 100 free, a heat that Matt Friede also qualified for as a freshman. Purdue also had a strong showing the 1,650 free thanks to scoring finishes from Drew Wolfred, Andrew Starr and Vinny Donnelly. Albert Miller scored in the 200 breaststroke as well.
Boudia represented Purdue on the All-Big Ten First Team. Wolfred was chosen as the Boilermakers' Sportsmanship Award honoree.
Selected Purdue swimmers will compete next weekend at the Ohio State NCAA Last Chance Meet. The Purdue divers will compete again the weekend of March 10-12 at the Zone C Diving meet, also set to be hosted by Ohio State in Columbus.
