MINNEAPOLIS - David Boudia established three new records while winning a springboard diving event for the second night in a row, highlighting day three of the Big Ten Conference Championships for Purdue men's swimming and diving.
The Boilermakers remained in fifth place thanks in part to another strong showing from the divers. Boudia, J.P. Perez (third in A final), Jimmy Page (third in B final) and Danny Cox (sixth in B final) teamed up to score 45 points in the 3-meter diving.
Boudia won his seventh career Big Ten title and is now two-thirds of the way to becoming the first competitor in the modern era (1988-present) to sweep the three diving events at the Big Ten Championships twice in a career. He only needs to win Saturday's platform competition, his Olympic specialty, to make conference history.
Boudia duplicated his record-setting trifecta of Thursday by scoring 509.90 points Friday from the 3-meter board. In the process, he established a new pool record at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center and eclipsed his conference and Big Ten Championships benchmarks from 2009.
Boudia won the event by 90 points and was awarded six perfect 10s on the fifth dive of his list, a forward 3 1/2 somersault pike (107B).
Among the Purdue swimmers, Brian Kiel established a new Purdue freshman record in the 100 backstroke (48.56) while finishing seventh in the B final of the event. The 200 free relay team of Ben Wachtel, Chuck Destro, Matt Friede and Danny Tucker posted the second-fastest time (1:19.26) in program history while finishing sixth.
Albert Miller was the Boilers' top individual scorer among the swimmers, finishing fourth in the B final of the 100 breast (54.23) with a career-best time. Wachtel also clocked a new personal-best time in the 200 free (1:37.17) while taking sixth in the B final. The times for both Miller and Wachtel rank among the top five all-time best swims in program history.
Brendan Joyce was also an individual scorer for Purdue while posting a team season-best time in the 100 fly (48.18).
The Big Ten Championships conclude Saturday, preliminaries beginning at noon (EST).
