Dive-by-Dive Scoring
The Boilermakers finished fifth as a team, only 5 ½ points behind fourth-place Penn State. The 5 ½-point difference was the smallest between any two teams. Host Indiana won its third straight Big Ten championship, out distancing second place Minnesota by 243 points.
Purdue's Kara Cook, Caitlin Hamilton and Ariel Martin were each named Second Team All-Big Ten. Individually each finished second overall in an event Saturday.
Cook was the runner-up in the platform diving, breaking the school record with a score of 349.55 in the preliminaries. She was second to Indiana's Laura Ryan by only 1.7 points in the finals.
Hamilton took second in the 1,650 free (16:05.00), finishing only three seconds shy of her school record from 2010.
Martin broke her own program benchmark in the 100 free (48.68), finishing as the runner-up and only one tenth of a second behind event winner Megan Detro of Ohio State.
Martin, Lisa Butler, Lauren Roth and Lauren Gustafson teamed up on the record-setting 400 free relay team (3:17.47). The quartet finished in fifth place, only three hundredths of a second behind Penn State.
As Purdue's top relay performers, a number of the same swimmers were part of multiple record-setting relays this week. Martin, Butler and Gustafson were each part of four. Gustafson swam the anchor leg on all three freestyle relays and the 400 medley relay. Roth was part of three.
Individually, Emily Fogle broke the Purdue 200 breaststroke record for the second time this year, finishing fifth with a time of 2:10.57. She improved on her time from the Purdue Invitational in the fall by about 2 1/2 seconds.
Butler (100 free) and Roth (200 fly) also finished second in the B final of their respective events Saturday.
Purdue is slated to an NCAA Last Chance Meet Saturday at noon. The NCAA Zone C Diving meet is March 10-12 in Columbus, Ohio and the NCAA Championships are slated for March 17-19 in Austin, Texas.
