Dive-by-Dive Scoring
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - New school records established by Caitlin Hamilton in the 500 freestyle and by the 200 free relay team highlighted day two of the Big Ten Conference Championships for Purdue women's swimming and diving.
The Boilermakers stand in fifth place with 146.5 points after the completion of day two action. Indiana leads the way with 279 points. The third through sixth-place teams - Ohio State (149), Michigan (147), Purdue and Penn State (143) - are separated by only six points.
"Our 200 free relay really led the way tonight with a school record," Purdue head coach John Klinge said. "We had some real bright spots this evening and we need to come back tomorrow and have a really strong morning."
Ariel Martin, Lisa Butler, Lauren Nichols and Lauren Gustafson teamed up on the record-setting 200 free relay, finishing third with a time of 1:29.70. Purdue improved on its school-record time from 2010 by more than a second and it was already the third relay school record broken by the Boilermakers at the 2011 Big Tens. Martin and Butler have been part a part of all three while Gustafson has contributed to both records in the free relay events.
Purdue was in the mix to win the 200 free relay but was out touched by Michigan and Penn State. The top three schools were separated by only a quarter of a second.
Hamilton won the consolation final of the 500 free with a time of 4:43.07, improving on her school-record time from 2010 by nine hundredths of a second.
Martin had the highest individual finish for the Boilermakers, placing fourth in the 50 free with a time of 22.51 and earning 15 points for her team. Her Purdue season-best time was one hundredth of a second shy of her program record from 2010.
Allie Smith and Lauren Roth qualified for the A final of the 200 individual medley and 500 free, respectively. Smith posted a new Purdue season-best time (1:59.07) in the morning preliminaries.
Erin Mertz was the Boilermakers' top-performing diver, finishing in 10th place in the 1-meter.
Butler also scored points for Purdue by finishing tied for fourth in the B final of the 50 free. Amy Gutwein (500 free) and Gustafson (50 free) also earned the right to swim in the evening session with personal season-best times in the morning preliminaries.
Action continues Friday with preliminaries at 11:30 a.m. The Big Ten Championships continue through Saturday evening.
