WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The third try was the charm for the Boilermakers as they gave Coach Versyp her 100th victory at Purdue by beating the Wolverines 65-64. The win improved Purdue to 10-5 on the season and 1-2 in the Big Ten.
Purdue came out of the gate strong, leading 21-14 before the Wolverines went on an 11-2 run to move ahead 25-23. Freshman point guard Courtney Moses ended the Michigan run with a three-pointer to put the Boilermakers back on top 26-25. Michigan then answered with back-to-back threes and a pair of baskets to extend their run to 21-5 and open up a nine-point lead. Michigan would take a 42-35 lead at the half.
Moses led all scorers with 17 first half points and would finish with a game-high 22. She connected on 6 of 11 three-pointers in the game, including 5 of 7 in the first half.
With 7:16 remaining in the second half, Moses put the Boilermakers ahead 58-56 with her sixth three-pointer of the night. It was Purdue's first lead since 8:12 remaining in the first half. The lead changed hands several times, but Purdue took its final lead on junior guard Brittany Rayburn's basket with 11 seconds remaining in the game. Rayburn would finish with 14 points, seven rebounds and a career-high six assists. The Wolverines had three shot opportunities to win the game but all three were pressured by Purdue and fell short.
Michigan outrebounded Purdue 18-16 in the first half but Purdue went to work on the boards in the second period to come away with a 40-28 rebounding advantage, including 21 offensive boards. Sophomore forward Ashley Wilson led Purdue with seven offensive boards and finished with a season-high nine rebounds. The Boilermakers sscored 15 points off their 21 offensive boards. It was the 12th time this season Purdue has outrebounded its opponent.
Purdue also was able to keep Michigan off the foul line. The Wolverines made 5 of 6 free throws, tying the season low by an opponent for makes and setting a season low for attempts.
After allowing Michigan 42 first-half points on 56.2 percent shooting, Purdue buckled down on defense in the second half and limited the Wolverines to 22 points and 28.0 percent from the field. The Boilermakers finished 24 of 65 for the game for 36.9 percent and Michigan was 25 of 57 for 43.9 percent in the contest.
Junior forward Carmen Reynolds led the Wolverines with 18 points. The Hilliard, Ohio, native was 4 of 7 from beyond the arc and pulled down eight rebounds.
