BOCA RATON, Fla.
- The Purdue swimming teams returned to competition with an impressive showing at the Florida Atlantic Invitational Wednesday, posting a number of individual victories and sweeping the dual meet scoring against Brown, FAU, Penn and LSU.

Purdue and LSU entered the meet as the nationally-ranked teams set to compete. By winning the head-to-head dual meeting scoring matchups with LSU, the Boilermakers emerged as the top performers of the day.

"Both the men and the women raced hard after a week and a half of constant training," Purdue women's coach John Klinge said. "I think we've gotten a lot of good things done down here and we've had some fun."

"The guys got the job done in a tough situation," Purdue men's coach Dan Ross said. "[Assistant coach] J. [Agnew] did a great job of getting these guys ready to perform in my absence; he gets all the credit. LSU is a good team and we are fortunate to get the win." Ross missed the first half of the meet to attend a funeral in South Carolina.

The Purdue swimmers had not competed since hosting the Purdue Invitational the weekend of Nov. 19-21. The Boilermakers have been in the Fort Lauderdale area since Dec. 29 for their annual winter training programs.

Although they are also currently in South Florida for winter training, the Purdue divers did not compete at the FAU Invitational. LSU did not enter divers either.

The Boilermakers are scheduled to return to campus this weekend and are slated to compete again the weekend of Jan. 14-16. Selected members of the men's team will compete at the SMU Invitational Jan. 14-15 and both teams will be in action Jan. 15 for a dual meet at Michigan State.

Women's Recap

Emily Fogle, Lauren Roth and Allie Smith each won multiple events to lead the way for the women. Roth was a three-time winner, capturing the 200 (1:50.57) and 500 freestyle (5:05.02) and 200 butterfly (2:02.17). Fogle swept the breaststroke events (1:03.42 in the 100, 2:18.24 in the 200), while Smith was victorious in the 100 backstroke (56.53) and 200 individual medley (2:05.21).

Smith (back) and Fogle (breast) teamed up with Lisa Butler (fly) and Ariel Martin (free) to help Purdue win the 200 medley relay (1:44.99), the opening event of the day.

Caitlin Hamilton was also an individual winner, capturing the 1000 free (10:03.66) by 22 seconds. However, the Boilermakers posted four of the top five times in the longest event of the day. Katie Guell, Jessica Skiba and Amy Gutwein were third through fifth, respectively.

Butler and Martin capped their productive meets by teaming with Lauren Nichols and Lauren Gustafson to help the 200 free relay team finish second. Earlier in the day, Butler finished only three one-hundredths of a second behind Roth in the 200 free and took third in the 100 free. Meanwhile, Martin was Purdue's top performer in the freestyle sprints, finishing second in the 100 and third in the 50.

Mary-Margaret Lopez posted a pair of top three showings as well, taking third in both the 100 and 200 butterfly.

Highlighted by Kristen Gilson and Colleen Drew finishing second and third in the 200 back, Purdue also had a pair of top five finishers in the 50 free (Martin third, Gustafson fifth), 100 back (Smith first, Katie Beck fourth) and 500 free (Roth first, Gutwein fourth).

Men's Recap

With only two individual winners - Ben Wachtel in the 200 freestyle (1:39.83) and Matt Stewart in the 1,000 free (9:25.30) - the men were able to win the day thanks to a bevy of top five finishers in multiple events, highlighted by strong showings in the freestyle.

Even though he finished second in both the 100 (56.56) and 200 breaststroke (2:05.26), Albert Miller was successful in posting new season-best times for Purdue in the two events. Chuck Destro also took second in a pair of events, the 50 free and 100 back.

Led by Wachtel, the Boilermakers featured three of the top four finishers (Drew Wolfred third, Alec LaMothe fourth) in the 200 free. Stewart's victory in the 1,000 free highlighted an event in which four of the top five times were posted (Andrew Starr second, Vinny Donnelly third, Luke Trimmer fifth) by Purdue swimmers. The Boilers also had three of the top four in the 500 free as Starr, Wolfred and LaMothe came in two-three-four. Starr was second to LSU's Craig Hamilton by just one one-hundredth of a second.

Purdue's top teams took second in the 200 medley and 200 free relays. Destro (back), Miller (breast), Daniel Michael (fly) and Wachtel (free) swam on the medley group and Wachtel, Destro, Matt Friede and Benjamin Ziolkowski teamed up for the final event of the day.
