WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue (15-7, 5-4) found its offensive rhythm in Sunday's 71-57 victory over Indiana (8-13, 2-7). The Boilermakers' 14-point margin of victory is the largest against the Hoosiers since 2007.
Purdue struck first with three quick points by Drey Mingo when she got fouled but made the shot and the free throw. Indiana responded with a bucket of its own by Jori Davis, but the Boilermakers went on an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 11-2. The Hoosiers then scored four straight points, but the mini-run was ended by an Alex Guyton jumper. By the 10 minute mark of the first half, Purdue was up 15-8 and continued to build its lead thanks to a three-pointer by Brittany Rayburn and back-to-back baskets from the game's leading scorer, Courtney Moses to push the score to 24-10. Indiana cut the Boilermakers' lead down to nine by halftime, 30-21.
The second half saw Indiana score a quick four points before Purdue regained the momentum on a 12-4 run. The lead opened up to 14 on a Rayburn jumper at the 15:48 mark and the Boilermakers extended the margin to 18 points at 10:34. Indiana responded with three-straight three-pointers by Hope Elam, which cut the lead back to nine, but the Boilermakers' answered with back-to-back three-pointers by Moses to extend the margin back out to 15 points.
After Moses' two long-range shots, Rayburn scored on a breakaway layup. With five minutes left in the game, the Boilermakers enjoyed a 62-45 lead. At 4:21, Moses hit a three-pointer just before the shot clock expired to give the Boilermakers their largest lead of the night at 20 points. After that, Indiana went on a 12-6 run to finish the game, but couldn't come close to breaking Purdue's lock on the contest.
Purdue held the lead from start to finish, never giving the Hoosiers the lead or a tie.
Moses got back on track with a game-high 23 points. The freshman point guard also contributed three rebounds, four assists and two steals. Three other Boilermakers scored in double-digits: Rayburn with 17, Mingo with 16 and Guyton with 11. Rayburn had a game- and career-high six steals to help spark Purdue's defensive effort.
The Hoosiers were led by Elam's 18 points and Davis scored 17, but committed 10 turnovers.
Purdue used its stout defense effectively, outrebounding the Hoosiers 38-33, and scoring 18 points off the Hoosiers' 20 turnovers. The Boilermakers finished with 11 steals and four blocked shots.
Purdue defeated Indiana earlier in the month, 55-50 in Bloomington and Sunday's victory completed the season sweep.
Purdue will stay at home in West Lafayette as Iowa comes to town on Feb. 3 for a 6:30 p.m. ET tip-off that will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
