WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - On the first day of a weekend double header, the Purdue women's tennis team rolled the Marquette Golden Eagles 6-1 on Saturday at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
The Boilermakers swept the doubles point for the second match in a row. Jumping out to a big 5-0 lead early was junior Anna Dushkina and sophomore Gisella Pere at No. 2 doubles over Paola Calderon and Rocio Diaz. The pair moved easily through the match, winning 8-2. In the top doubles spot, 13th-ranked Jenny Rabot and Mara Schmidt were down an initial 0-2 to Christina Ruiz and Rachael Hush. The top Boilermaker team came back hard, breaking to earn a 5-2 lead and would finish out the match and clinch the doubles point, 8-4.
Sealing the doubles sweep on the 3rd court was No. 68 senior Bhavani Tirumurti and Imogen Golder. The pair dualed Chelsea Utting and Gillian Hush in a tight match, but claimed the win, 8-6.
First to score in singles was Golder defeating Ruiz 6-3, 6-2 in the 5th spot. Soon after, sophomore Pere beat Diaz by a similar score, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. Securing the match for the Old Gold and Black was Dushkina at No. 4 singles overpowering Gillian Hush 6-3, 6-1. Adding to Purdue's point total was Tirumurti winning her match with Calderon for the second time on the day, 6-4, 6-3.
On the top court, junior Rabot faced the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's No. 103 ranked singles player, Kelly Barry. Rabot claimed a 6-4 first set and finished out the match with a 6-0 second.
This marks the second match that the Boilermakers have claimed singles five matches.
"I was pleased with the way the team competed today; I thought we played much better than last weekend," said head coach Laura Glitz. "Tomorrow we will need the same intensity on the court to beat Illinois State."
Purdue faces the Red Birds on Sunday at noon at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
