WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After getting out to a slow start in Thursday's game against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (7-13), Purdue (14-7, 4-4 Big Ten) stormed back to a 69-39 victory.
The Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game, but Courtney Moses hit a field goal at 17:12 to start a 32-7 run that Purdue would never look back from.
By halftime, Purdue held a comfortable 35-20 lead, connecting on 12 of its 24 shots while holding the Cougars to 25.0 percent from the field. The only troubling statistic for the Boilermakers were their 10 turnovers in the first half.
Purdue scored the first eight points of the second period, extending its lead to 23 points. The Boilermakers dominated in the paint against the smaller Cougars, led by Alex Guyton who scored a career-high 16 points to lead all scorers. Antionette Howard pitched in 10 points and six rebounds for Purdue while Moses, Dee Dee Williams and Drey Mingo contributed eight points each. With 45 seconds left, Williams scored the final bucket of the game to give Purdue it's largest lead of the night and a 30 point victory, 69-39.
SIU Edwardsville had a five-game winning streak coming into tonight's contest. Michaela Herrod was coming off back-to-back double-double games for the Cougars in which she averaged 17 points and 18.5 rebounds. The Boilermakers held her scoreless and limited her to just two boards. Raven Berry did record a double-double for SIUE with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jazmin Hill, the Cougars leading scorer, also reached double-digits with 10 points.
Up next for the Boilermakers will be intrastate rival Indiana on Sunday at noon ET in Mackey Arena. The game will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
