, - The Boilermakers suffered a defeat by close margain at home on Saturday, falling to the Western Michigan Broncos 4-3 at the .
The Broncos swept the doubles point, first claiming a win at No. 1 doubles. Michael and Thomas Calderone defeated senior Eric Ramos and sophomore Krisztian Krocsko 8-5 to begin the scoring. Next was Casey Cullen and Pablo Olivarez over freshman Szymon Tatarczyk and junior Pawel Poziomski to clinch the point, 8-6.
Tatarczyk finished his day with another win, this time on the singles court. The Gorzyczki, native overpowered Olivarez 6-2, 6-3 in the 3rd singles spot to even the overall scoring for Purdue. Next to strike was Kazuya Komada of defeating Ramos 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to pull his team ahead. Another Bronco would score from there; at No. 6 singles Brad Noel () beat Poziomski 6-4, 7-5. Freshman Mark Kovacs made his mark overcoming Simon Blomberg 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 at the 4th singles slot making the overall score 2-3.
The match would come down to Nos. 1 and 5 singles where Krocsko and Michael Calderone battled for the second time on the day and on the 5th court where freshman Aaron Dujovne and Casey Cullen were into a third set. Calderone would close out a tight match over Krocsko and claim the win for his team. Cullen retired ending his bout with Dujovne at 5-7, 7-5, 1-2.
"The guys competed hard, but we just didn't capitalize on our opportunties," said assistant coach Brandon Lenfert. "You have to come up with big shots when an experienced team such as gives you chances. They are a well-coached and veteran team that came ready to play; you have to give them credit. We just have to get better, that's the bottom line."
