WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - After a loss in Evanston just two weeks ago, Purdue was determined not to allow Northwestern to sweep the series. The Boilermakers exacted revenge against the Wildcats with a 54-43 win.
The Boilermakers opened the game on a 13-4 run in which they held Northwestern without a field goal. Beth Marshall broke the field-goal drought for the Wildcats with a three-pointer at 10:47 in the half to pull within six at 13-7. At the break, Purdue had held the Wildcats to just 15 points,enjoying an 11-point lead with the score 26-15.
Strong rebounding (24-18) and more accurate shooting from the field (34.5 percent to 20 percent) kept Purdue's lead in double-digits in the first period. The Boilermakers led by as many as 14 points in the first half.
The Boilermakers continued their strong play into the second half, keeping a double-digit advantage over the Wildcats in the first seven minutes of play, stretching it back out to a 14-point lead on two occasions. At the 12:57 mark, Brittany Rayburn exited the game to receive treatment on a head injury after an intentional foul was called on Northwestern's Amy Jaeschke. Rayburn returned two minutes later.
By the halfway point of the second period, Purdue held a commanding 13-point lead over Northwestern, 40-27. With 3:19 left in the game, Northwestern cut Purdue's lead to eight points but never got it any closer as the Boilermakers hit their free throws down the stretch and grabbed several offensive rebounds to come away with a 54-43 victory.
The strong play of Drey Mingo played a big part in the Purdue win. Mingo recorded her second double-double of the season, with team highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds. Rayburn was Purdue's second-leading scorer with 11 points and the only other Boilermaker in double figures. Alex Guyton came up with four steals, the fourth time this season she has had four or more steals in a contest and point guard Courtney Moses was Purdue's second-leading rebounder with six.
For Northwestern, Jaeschke sscored a game-high 19 points. Beth Marshall added 10 more points for the Wildcats, who were just 1 of 14 for 7.1 percent from three-point range - the lowest percentage by a Purdue opponent this season.
Rebounds were a key component of Purdue's victory as the Boilermakers outrebounded Northwestern 45-31, including a 19-7 advantage on the offensive boards.
Both Purdue and Northwestern move to 3-3 in conference play.
Next up for Purdue is Penn State on Thursday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m. in Mackey Arena. It will be the first meeting between the teams this season.
