Results
DALLAS - Brian Kiel, Albert Miller and Matt Stewart each posted a new season top time but Purdue men's swimming and diving had to settle for sixth place among a very fast field after the final night of competition at the Classic at SMU.
Stewart won the consolation heat of the 500 free (4:26.06) with an NCAA provisional-qualifying time.
Kiel and Miller, meanwhile, each posted a new season top time for the second night in a row. Miller has now established new season-best times in the 100 and 200 breast in consecutive meets. He improved on his time at last week's FAU Invitational in the 200 breast (2:03.83) by more than a second.
Kiel finished third in the 200 back (1:46.61) and missed out on an NCAA provisional-qualifying time by one one-hundredth of a second. Andrew Starr also took third in a championship heat, performing well in the 500 free.
Purdue's 200 medley relay team of Chuck Destro, Miller, Brendan Joyce and Ben Wachtel also posted a season-best time (1:30.80) for the program. The 400 free relay team managed to finish in fourth place, less than a second behind the event-winning group from USC.
"I should be disappointed at SMU beating us by two points, but really I am not," Purdue head coach Dan Ross said. "We embraced the meet, raced/dove hard and came up a little short. "We're looking forward to flying to Detroit and swimming Michigan, the SMU Classic Champs, hesd to hesd tomorrow."
The Boilermakers continue their busy weekend Sunday when they fly back to the Midwest to join their teammates in Ann Arbor for a 5 p.m. dual meet at Michigan. The Wolverines won the six-team invitational field at SMU that featured five teams ranked among the CSCAA Top 25.
