WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Taking on their final nonconference opponent before the start of Big Ten Conference action, the Purdue Boilermakers (9-3) defeated Western Illinois (3-9) 76-44 in Mackey Arena.
The Boilermakers took a 9-4 lead over the Leathernecks to start the game, but a 5-0 run by Western Illinois evened the tally. Such was the first half as the two squads stayed tight until Purdue produced a 14-4 run fueled in part by Dee Dee Williams' career-high 10 points. Williams made all three of her field goals, hit 4 of 5 free throws, pulled down three rebounds in 24 minutes on the night.
With two minutes left in the first half, junior Brittany Rayburn beat the shot clock, sinking a long three-pointer, giving the Boilermakers momentum and adding to her team's largest lead of the half at 16 points.
Before the big three-pointer, at 6:43 in the first half, Rayburn became Purdue's 26th player to score 1,000 or more points in a career, joining coaches Sharon Versyp and Ukari Figgs in this honor. Rayburn becomes the seventh fastest player to make this list, doing so in just 80 games. The Attica, Ind., native had a game-high 14 points and five rebounds against the Leathernecks.
Purdue eased into a 19-2 second half run led by junior Drey Mingo who had five points in the streak, making up half of her 10 for the game. Mingo played 15 minutes, pulling down four rebounds and notching two steals.
Reigning and three-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week, Courtney Moses also had 10 points and three rebounds.
Purdue will stay high in conference field goal defense standings by holding Western Illinois to just 17 of 52 from the field, the eighth team to be held under 40 percent by the Boilermakers. Purdue extends to a 7-0 series mark over Western Illinois.
The Old Gold and Black has extended its win streak to five games as Purdue enters conference play. The Boilermakers open the Big Ten season agianst Wisconsin on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. ET in Mackey Arena for Service Appreciation Night.
