WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team rolled through its second day of the Purdue Invitational on Saturday.
The Old Gold and Black competed singles and doubles against Denver University in hidden dual-match style.
Junior Jennifer Rabot and freshman Mara Schmidt saw Sophia Bergner and Elena Najera in the top doubles spot. The Denver team was no test for the Boilermakers who took the match 8-4.
Sophomore Gisella Pere and junior Anna Dushkina took on Natalie Dunn and Caroline Schnell in the second doubles spot. Dunn and Schnell jumped out to an early 5-2 lead and stayed on top within striking distance at 7-4. The Purdue team raged back rallying for four straight games and pushing the tiebreaker. Pere and Dushkina claimed the match after a thrilling tiebreaker 9-8 (7-5).
The home team went into singles with winning confidence, asserting themselves on every court.
ITA preseason ranked No. 82 player, Rabot, faced Bergner at No. 1 singles and beat the Denver player 6-1, 6-2. Schmidt (Bradenton, Fla.) also defeated Elena Najera (Denver) 6-2, 6-4 in the second singles position.
The Boilermakers had three matches that ventured a third set at No. 3, 4 and No. 5 singles. Senior Bhavani Tirumurti claimed what looked like an easy set from Emma Isberg 6-1, but then fell in the second 4-6. The Purdue senior stormed back in the third to take the match 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.
Dushkina (Richmond Hill, Ont.) lost a close first set 4-6 to Schnell at No. 4, but went on to take the next two sets 6-1, 6-3.
Pere (Guayaquil, Ecuador) played her second close match of the day at No. 5 singles against Natalie Dunn. The Purdue sophomore lost the first 5-7, but cruised through the second and third 6-4, 6-0.
The Schwartz Tennis Center hosts one more day of tennis action on Sunday when Purdue finishes out a team-match with Louisville in singles.
