WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Boilermaker volleyball team dominated Iowa in all facets of Friday night's match en route to a 3-0 sweep. Purdue won the match 25-15, 25-16 and 25-13.
Junior Tiffany Fisher provided a highlight in the match, serving up four straight aces in the opening set and added a fifth two plays later. The five-ace output is the best for a Boilermaker server since Kelli Miller achieved the feat on Oct. 17, 2008. Fisher also added five kills in the match.
Redshirt freshmen Catherine Rebarchak and Katie Griffin shouldered half of the offensive load, combining for 25 kills and hitting .500 with just one error between them. Rebarchak chalked up 13 kills, while Griffin added 12 on an errorless night. Sophomore Anna Drewry and senior setter Jaclyn Hart also contributed offensively with kill tallies of eight and seven respectively. As a team, Purdue hit .359, while holding the Hawkeyes to a .094 effort.
Defensively, sophomore Carly Cramer pulled up a match-high 24 digs, while junior Emily Ehlers posted 12. At the net, senior Kristen Arthurs put up a match-high five blocks, while also adding five kills on the offensive end. Purdue outblocked Iowa 8-2 and posted 62 digs to the Hawkeyes' 47.
The Boilermakers won Set 1 going away thanks in part to a stellar serving effort by Fisher, including five aces, four of which were consecutive. Fisher served eight straight points in a 9-0 Purdue run, which turned a 7-5 advantage into a 16-5 lead. The Boilermakers let the Hawkeyes back into the set with four straight points which made it 16-9, but that is as close at the Iowa squad would get. Purdue raised its lead to 10 at 24-14 after back to back kills by Drewry and Fisher. A service error paused the charge momentarily, but Rebarchak capped the set with her fourth kill of the stanza. Arthurs also chalked up four kills in the set, which saw Purdue outhit Iowa .324 to .152.
Purdue jumped out to a 14-4 advantage in Set 2, forcing Iowa to use up both of its timeouts, en route to a 25-16 win. The Boilermakers used a balanced and efficient offensive attack in the win, outhitting the Hawkeyes .400 to .086 as five players posted three or more kills. Bashen served up an ace in the early rally, while Griffin posted three kills and Rebarchak and Hart each added a pair. Purdue pushed the margin to 11 at 17-6 after a block by Hart and Arthurs and two more Griffin putaways. Iowa used a 3-0 run to cut the lead to eight, but the Boilermakers responded five of the next eight points to go up by 11 again at 23-12. Griffin, Rebarchak, Drewry and Fisher contributed offensively in the run. It was an eight point game again at 23-15, but an Iowa hitting error and a kill by Hart eventually wrapped the stanza.
The teams split the first 10 points of Set 3, but Purdue scored 10 of the next 11 to pull away, before taking the set 25-13. Griffin piled up three kills in the scoring run, while Rebarchak added two kills and two blocks, including a solo stuff. Drewry added another kill to cap the 10-1 run and make it 16-7. Iowa capitalized on three Purdue miscues to narrow the gap to seven at 17-10, but the Boilermakers rattled off eight of the last 11 to close out the match. Four different players contributed kills down the final stretch, while Griffin and Fisher teamed up on a block. An Arthurs kill set up match point at 24-12, but the Hawkeyes thwarted the effort. Griffin secured the sweep with her 12th kill of the night.
The Boilermakers (16-8, 7-6 Big Ten) return to action at 7 p.m. Saturday when they take on No. 19 Minnesota.
