WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team finished its first day of home court play at the Purdue Invitational on Friday.
The Boilermakers played two dual-match style doubles rounds against University of Akron and Louisville and rounded out competition with six singles matches against Akron.
At No. 1 doubles, Jenny Rabot (Bishop's Stortford, Eng.) and Mara Schmidt (Bradenton, Fla.) faced Angelina Jogasuria and Zara Harutyunyan and defeated the Zip team 8-2. Next, the pair faced Louisville's Mandy Brown and Julie Fellerhoff. The two teams stayed close holding serve until they traded breaks at 3-4 and 4 all, again at 6-7 and 7 all. The undeniably tight match met a stalemate-deciding tiebreaker, but the Old Gold and Black triumphed 9-8 (10-5).
In the third doubles spot, senior Bhavani Tirumurti and sophomore Imogen Golder extended their undefeated streak to 8-0 after taking out Akron team Natalia Kuvakina and Anya Baronayte 8-5 and Louisville duo Gabi Duncan and Kaysara Mandry 8-3.
The Boilermaker domination continued into singles against Akron. Rabot, ITA preseason ranked 82nd, met Harutyunyan again and held on to a close 7-6 (7-1) first set. From there, Rabot rolled to take the match 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 at the top singles slot.
Purdue's only senior, Tirumurti, had a similar first set and tiebreaker at No. 3 singles against Angelika Jogasuria and came away with it, 7-6 (8-6). Tirumurti stayed hot in the second to finish the day strong 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
Anna Dushkina (Richmond Hill, Ont.) made quick work of Prang Pantusart 6-2, 6-2 at 4th singles while Golder (Auckland, New Zealand) took out Kuvakina at No. 6 by the same score.
The Schwartz Tennis Center hosts two more days of tennis action on Saturday and Sunday when Purdue takes on Denver and finishes out team-match with Louisville in singles.
