EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Boilermaker volleyball team gave fans their money's worth, pulling out a 3-2 win over Michigan State Saturday night. Purdue won the match 22-25, 25-20, 27-25, 13-25, 15-8.
Sophomore Anna Drewry paced the offense with a match-high 17 kills. Senior Kristen Arthurs added 11 kills and four stuffs in her final match in her home state. Junior Tiffany Fisher added nine putaways, while redshirt freshman Katie Griffin posted seven. Senior Jaclyn Hart and sophomore Ariel Turner chipped in six kills apiece.
Fisher led Purdue at the net with five stuffs, while Hart and Arthurs each registered four. In the backcourt, redshirt junior Blair Bashen pulled up 16 digs, while junior Emily Ehlers added 11. Hart completed her double-double with 11 digs to go with 54 assists.
Purdue hit .429 in the closing stanza and limited MSU to a .158 effort en route to a 15-8 win in the decisive fifth set. The Boilermakers jumped out to a 4-1 lead as Drewry, Rebarchak and Fisher turned in kills. Michigan State tied it up at 4-4, but kills by Drewry and Griffin and an MSU net violation put Purdue on top 7-4 and force a timeout. Hart added a kill and Fisher served up an ace to push ahead 9-5 and prompt MSU to use its final timeout. Kills by Arthurs, Rebarchak and Drewry and a stuff by Drewry and Arthurs stretched the lead to 13-7. After a MSU putaway, Rebarchak added a kill and Drewry posted the solo block to clinch the 15-8 win and the match.
In an error riddled first set, Michigan State managed to come from behind and steal the 25-22 win. The Boilermaker rattled off five straight points to start the match. Rebarchak registered two blocks and a kill, while Fisher added a putaway in the stretch. The Spartans pulled within three at 7-4, but kills by Drewry and Hart and a block by Arthurs and Hart pushed the margin to five at 10-5. MSU began chipping away, and then used a 5-0 run to turn a 13-9 deficit into a 14-13 lead. A kill by Rebarchak and an ace by Bashen put Purdue back on top 15-14. The Boilermakers led by two at 17-15 after a kill by Turner and a Spartan error, but Michigan State charged back with six of the next seven to go ahead 21-18. Kills by Arthurs, Drewry and Rebarchak made it a one-point game at 22-21, forcing an MSU timeout. A hitting error and a kill, however, gave the Spartans a shot at the set at 24-21. Turner thwarted the first effort, but a kill capped the MSU win.
Set 2 featured nine ties and four lead changes, but the Boilermakers hit .267 to MSU's .059 effort en route to a 25-20 win. Drewry posted six kills in the stanza, while Fisher added three and a pair of blocks. Purdue led 4-2 in the early goings, but MSU used a 6-0 run to turn it around. The Boilermakers countered with four straight, as Fisher combined with Hart and Drewry on a pair of stuff and added a putaway, tying it at 8-8. Purdue surged into the lead at 11-10 on a Fisher ace. MSU went up 13-12, but the Boilermakers scored five of the next six, three on Spartan miscues and two on Drewry kills, to retake the lead at 17-14. The Spartans managed a tie at 18, but kills by Hart and Griffin pushed the margin to three at 21-18. Purdue scored four of the last five to close out the set.
It took Purdue three set-point attempts, but the Boilermakers finished off a 27-25 win in third stanza as Drewry and Fisher pounded down kills. Six players tallied kills, led by Arthurs's five, in the victory. The teams split the first 16 points, but MSU managed to go up 14-11, forcing a Purdue timeout. The Boilermakers trailed by three against at 19-16, but this time put together a 4-0 run, including two kills and a block by Griffin. The Spartans tied it up at 20 and 21, but an Arthurs kill and an MSU hitting error gave Purdue the 23-21 edge. Michigan State tied it at 23, but a service error offered the Boilermakers their first shot at the set. Drewry pounded a kill off the block two plays later to make it 25-24. An MSU kill kept the set going, before Drewry and Fisher ended the stanza.
Despite splitting the first 12 points of the set with Purdue, Michigan State won set four going away. The Spartans led by as many as 12 in the stanza en route to the 25-13 win. MSU hit .304, while holding Purdue to a -.069 effort.
Purdue (19-10, 10-8 Big Ten) returns home to Belin Court to face Wisconsin and Illinois on Friday and Saturday. First serve both nights is at 7 p.m.
