WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - In Purdue's Preseason WNIT second round matchup against Toledo, the Boilermakers trailed by seven at the half. Behind better offensive execution in the second period, Purdue fought its way back to defeat the Rockets 79-66.
In the first half, the Rockets shot nearly 52 percent, including 56 percent from three-point range. The Boilermakers shot only 42 percent and did not connect on any three-point attempts, going 0 for 5. Purdue's four blocked shot and five steals kept the game a close contest in a half that featured eight ties and 10 lead changes.
The second half saw a different Purdue team. Toledo took a 42-35 early lead in the second period, but Purdue went on a 10-3 run to tie the game at 45 with 14:52 remaining. It remained close for the next couple of minutes, but a three-pointer at the 11-minute mark by Sam Ostarello gave Purdue the lead at 54-53. The Boilermakers finished the last 11 minutes on a 28-13 run to win by 13 points. Strong free throw shooting helped seal the victory as Purdue hit all six of its free throw attempts in the last three minutes of the game and finished 20 of 22 from the line for 90.9 percent.
Drey Mingo was a force after the break, scoring 17 points to finish with 21 total. She was one of four Boilermakers to score in double-digits, with Brittany Rayburn (18), Antionette Howard (15) and Ostarello (10) joining Mingo.
While Purdue's offense began to click, the defense went to work shutting down Toledo. The Rocket's field goal percentage dipped to 33 percent, including going 2 for 9 from three-point range. Purdue recorded six more steals and four more blocked shots in the final 20 minutes. Alex Guyton led the Boilermakers in steals with five, while Mingo blocked four shots, half of the Boilermakers' total of eight, in the game.
For the Rockets, three players reached double figures. Guard Naama Shafir led all players in the game with 23 points and six assists. Melissa Goodall finished with 12 and Haylie Linn, making three three-pointers, ended the game with 10 points.
With the win, Purdue improves to 2-0 and will play host to South Dakota State in the semifinals of the Preseason WNIT at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, in Mackey Arena. The game is not part of the season ticket package but fans can purchase tickets from the Athletic Ticket Office or at purduesports.com.
