WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - With a strong balance between offense and defense, Purdue extended its streak of exhibition wins to 31-consecutive victories. The Boilermakers defeated UW-Parkside, an NCAA Division II institution, 88-48. Leading the Boilermakers in scoring was junior forward Drey Mingo, who totaled 19 points. Not far behind were junior guard Brittany Rayburn with 17 points and sophomore guard KK Houser with 16 points.
The beginning of the game featured the Boilers and the Rangers trading leads, before Houser sank a three-pointer to give the Boilermakers a 17-14 advantage at the 8:33 mark. From that point on, Purdue never allowed UW-Parkside to regain the lead or tie. Purdue closed out the first half with a 13-4 run, including a buzzer-beating fastbreak layup by Rayburn.
While the first half showcased the Boilermakers' strong defense, the second half showed off Purdue's explosive offense. Purdue started off with a 19-7 run, extending the lead to 61-32. After scoring four points in the first half, Mingo delivered 15 in the second, including 10 in a row in a span of 3:36.
In the second period, the Boilermakers grabbed 22 rebounds to push their total to 39 for the game, outrebounding the Rangers by 10 boards.
Mingo led the team on the defensive end with three steals and in rebounding with seven boards. This was Mingo's first game in a Purdue jersey after sitting out last year after transferring from Maryland. Purdue's two freshman, guards Courtney Moses and Dee Dee Williams, combine for eight points, five rebounds, two steals, two blocks and four assists.
Purdue had 15 steals in the game, including nine in the first half and forced UW-Parkside into 24 turnovers. Purdue's 88 points were the most in an exhibition game since 2001, when Purdue defeated RTU Klondaika 96-66. The 40-point margin of victory was the eighth largest in Purdue history for exhibition games. Head coach Sharon Versyp improved her record to 6-0 in exhibition games at Purdue.
The Boilermakers will play their second and final exhibition game of the season against the University of Indianapolis on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET in Mackey Arena.
