Final Day Of June Stewart Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Purdue women's tennis team finished its final day of the June Stewart Invitational on Sunday in Nashville, Tenn.

Gisella Pere (Guayaquil, Ecuador) appeared in the consolation finals of the Alexander draw where she met Ashley Canty of Murray State. The Purdue sophomore eased through the first set 6-2, and kept her momentum going, finishing out Canty 6-2, 6-2 to win the consolation group.

Junior Remi Martin met her second Belmont opponent in two days, Abby Leatherwood, in the Balfas draw consolation final. The San Diego, Calif. native was narrowly beaten in the first set 4-6, but bounced back in the second, getting on the board with a 6-3 victory. Martin kept it going in the tiebreaker and claimed the win and the draw 4-6, 6-3, (10-5).

Pere and Martin also paired up in the consolation doubles final against Canty and Cassidy Cunitz (Murray State). The Boilermaker team closed out the great day with another victory to win the bracket 8-6.

The event entails five 8-player singles draws, a 16-player doubles draw and an additional group of round robin doubles matches.
