DALLAS - Despite posting four second-place finishes on day two of the SMU Classic, Purdue women's swimming and diving ended up finishing third, only four points behind the host Mustangs, at the two-day, five-team meet.
USC (420) won the SMU classic handily, winning every event but the 3-meter dive. SMU (314) narrowly edged out Purdue (310) followed by Louisville (288) and Rice (220).
Erin Mertz finished second in the 3-meter dive with a score of 335.95 points, taking second in both diving events of the weekend. SMU's Audra Egenolf won the 3-meter event with a new meet-record score of 346.85.
"Erin Mertz dove well all weekend and our swimmers all raced hard," Purdue head coach John Klinge said. "I thought we were a little sharper tonight and the women competed very well."
Lauren Roth took second in the 500 freestyle, posting an NCAA provisional time of 4:48.41. Kristen Gilson also finished second in the B heat of the 500 free.
Allie Smith posted the other individual second-place finish in an A heat for Purdue on day two. She was second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:03.75. USC's Lyndsay De Paul won the event with a pool and meet record time of 1:58.85.

Individually, Martin (51.92) was third in the A heat of the 100 free, but Butler posted a better time (51.66) while finishing second in the B heat.
