Day One Results | SMU Classic Scoring System

DALLAS - With 155 team points after the first night of competition of the two-day, five-team SMU Classic, Purdue women's swimming and diving is tied for second place with the host Mustangs.

USC (212 points) is the meet leader after the opening night. Louisville (146) and Rice (108) round the five-team meet. Each team is limited to eight swimmers and one diver at the SMU Classic.

The 50 and 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, 400 individual medley, 1-meter dive 800 free relay and 400 medley relay were contested Friday night. The meet concludes Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. (EDT).

"There were good efforts by all tonight," Purdue head coach John Klinge said. "We are in a good team race and we will need to swim a little sharper tomorrow."

Because SMU's Perkins Natatorium has a six-lane pool, SMU Classic events feature A and B heats of five competitors each. Swimmers competing in the B heats cannot outscores their counterparts in the A heats even if they post better times.

Such was the case for the Purdue competitors in the 200 free and 400 IM. Kristen Gilson and Ariel Martin scored more points, but Emily Fogle and Lauren Roth actually posted better times in the B heats of those respective events.

Erin Mertz finished second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 291 points, earning 13 team points for Purdue.

Martin was the Boilermakers' top individual scorer of the night, earning 25 points thanks to a second-place finish in the 50 free and third-place showing in the 200 free.

Purdue finished third in both relay events of the night, earning 18 points in the 400 medley and 800 freestyle. Lisa Butler swam the freestyle portion of the medley and the third leg of the 800 free. She also won the B heat of the 50 free to earn nine points individually for Purdue.

Allie Smith (back), Emily McIlrath (fly) and Fogle (breast) made up the rest of the medley relay. Roth, Gilson and Martin teamed with Butler for the free relay.

Fogle recorded 16 points for the Boilermakers, highlighted by a third-place finish in the A heat of the 100 breast. Smith was also third in the 100 back. Gilson and McIlrath finished fourth in the A heats of the 400 IM and 100 fly, respectively.

USC had competitors post new meet records in the 100 fly, 100 back, 400 IM, 800 free relay and 1-meter dive, as well as a bevy of NCAA provisional times in numerous events, en route to jumping out to its day one lead.
