ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Purdue women's tennis team ended the last day of the Wolverine Invitational on a good note, netting four singles and two doubles victories.
Freshman Mara Schmidt, junior Jenny Rabot and senior Bhavani Tirumurti all had repeat days taking singles and doubles wins. Schmidt (Bradenton, Fla.) defeated her second Marquette player in two days, Olga Fischer 7-5, 6-1, while Rabot (Bishop's Stortford, England) beat Western Michigan's Maria Nivia 6-4, 6-1. Tirumurti (Jakarta, Indonesia) had a tough time with Big Ten Conference opponent Whitney Wilson (MSU) but finished strong, 6-7 (1-7), 6-2, 6-3.
Sophomore Imogen Golder also claimed a win on Sunday over Marquette's Gillian Hush 6-4, 6-2.
Doubles duo Rabot and Schmidt won their second consecutive match rolling Michigan State's Katarina Lingl and Olga Chernova 8-2. Also on a roll were Golder and Tirumurti, receiving a win after Christina Ruiz and Rachel Hush of Marquette retired at 6-4.
"Overall, it was a good tournament for us," head coach Laura Glitz said, "I was pleased with the way the team rebounded in days two and three, competing hard and wining a lot of matches. Bhavani (Tirumurti) stood out this tournament. She played some great tennis and really showed good senior leadership."
The lone Boilermaker senior will lead the team to University of Central Florida's UCF Invitational next weekend (Oct. 8-10) that features Arkansas, Central Florida, and Missouri.
