LEXINGTON, Ky. - Purdue players Jan-Frans Engelbrecht, Matt Manasse, Billy Heuer and Szymon Tatarczyk finished out qualifying draws at the 2010 USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Indoor Championships being held at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex and the Lexington Tennis Club, in Lexington, Ky., on Thursday.
Engelbrecht (Cape Town, South Africa) faced Ball State's Andres Monroy in the first round of qualifying, surviving the Cardinal player 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. The junior Boilermaker advanced to the second and final qualifying round against Nik Shroeder of EKU and made his way into the main draw 7-6 (3), 7-5. Engelbrecht increases his fall singles record to 6-3 and takes on Bryant Salcedo of Vanderbilt in his main draw debut.
To cap off a great day, Engelbrecht also teamed with fellow junior Matt Manasse to defeat Ball State opponents Alexandre Brym and Dave Thomas 8-6 in the first round of qualifying. The Purdue duo moves forward to the doubles main draw after eliminating Alex Das and Hugo Klientovsky of Eastern Kentucky 8-2. In the main event, Engelbrecht and Manasse are placed against the No. 1-seeded (No. 8 ITA preseason ranked) doubles duo Eric Quigley and Brad Cox of Kentucky.
As main draw action ramps up, the remaining Boilermakers take their places in the championship-deciding draws. Sophomore Krisztian Krocsko (8-3), who recently defeated Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason ranked opponents at the All-American Championships, squares off against Memphis' David Henry.
Freshman teammates Tatarczyk, Aaron Dujovne and Mark Kovacs also appear in the first round. Tatarczyk (Wodzislaw, Poland) takes on Tennessee's Ed Jones, while Dujovne (Santiago, Chile) sees Adam Baker (Vanderbilt).
Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) owns a 6-4 fall singles record and hopes to extend it against Alejandro Calligari of Louisville in the first round.
Making his first fall appearance is lone Purdue senior Eric Ramos. The Alameda, Calif., native's first-round opponent is Alex Zotov of Vanderbilt.
This prominent tournament is one of 12 Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional tournaments happening over the weekend. Purdue contends with players from Dayton, Eastern Kentucky, Lipscomb, Louisville, Kentucky, UT-Chattanooga, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, IUPUI, Tennessee Tech, East Tennessee State, Butler, Memphis, Ball State, Wright State and Xavier.
The nation's top collegiate player, J.P. Smith of Tennessee, is the tournament's No. 1 seed. The second seed was awarded to Kentucky's Eric Quigley (No. 8), followed by Austen Childs of Louisville (No. 10) in the third spot. Six other preseason-ranked competitors (No. 20 Ryan Lipman - Vanderbilt, No. 21 Rhyne Williams - Tennessee, No. 32 Alex Musialek - Kentucky, No. 63 Simon Childs - Louisville, No. 83 Tennys Sandgren - Tennessee and No. 93 Grega Teraz - ETSU) round out the top of the lineup, as well as four ranked doubles teams (No. 8 Quigley/Brad Cox - Kentucky, No. 45 Childs/Viktor Maksimcuk - Louisville, No. 47 Jordan Smith/David Henry - Memphis and No. 48 Adam Baker/Lipman - Vanderbilt).
The event features a 44-player singles qualifying round out of which 11 players have advanced to the 64-player singles main draw. This entirely indoor tournament also entails a doubles qualifying draw with six teams having advanced to the main event.
