GLENVIEW, Ill. - Led by three players in red numbers for the final round, the No. 23 Purdue men's golf team posted a six-under 278 on Monday to earn a share of fifth place at the Windon Memorial Classic.
The Boilermakers' final-round effort, which was the second-best of the day and equaled the sixth-best in program history, moved them two spots up the leader board and into a tie with Indiana. The Boilers finished the two-day event with a total of 868 (+16), which tied for the 14th-best score in school history for a 54-hole tournament.
Freshman Adam Schenk added his name to Purdue's individual record books on Monday, notching eight birdies on his way to a six-under 65 in the final round. The performance matched the fourth-best round in program history, and moved him into third place for the tournament with a total of 210 (-3).
The top-three finish was also the second this season for the Vincennes, Ind., native, as he also won the Purdue/Midwest Shootout earlier this month.
Senior Erich Johnston provided the exclamation point on the Boilers' solid day with a hole-in-one on the par-three 16th hole en route to a three-under 68 for Monday's round. The effort matched Johnston's career best and moved him into a tie for 14th place with a total of 216 (+3).
Interestingly, Johnston set his career best of 68 exactly a year ago - Sept. 27, 2009 - in the final round of the Wolverine at Radrick Farms.
The Boilermakers' third red number of Monday's round came from senior Nakarintra Ratanakul, who posted a one-under 70 on the strength of an eagle and three birdies to finish in a 24th-place tie with a total of 219 (+6). Junior Tyler Duncan tied for 63rd with a total of 227 (+14), while sophomore Henry Plager rounded out Purdue's lineup in a tie for 87th place with a mark of 241 (+28).
Freshman Edward Peters, playing as an individual, carded a 78 (+7) on Monday to finish 82nd with a total of 235 (+22).
The Boilermakers will be idle for two weeks before returning to the course for Ohio State's Jack Nicklaus Invitational, scheduled for Oct. 11 and 12 in Columbus, Ohio.
