WACO, TEXAS - Purdue newcomers completed the first day of tough competition at the HEB Baylor Invitational on Friday in Waco, Texas.
Out of the four, Krisztian Krocsko is the only one still alive in main draw competition. The Virginia Commonwealth sophomore transfer ran over Matt Teivens of Texas Pan American 6-3, 7-6. He went on to survive a difficult three set match over Texas Christian's Emanuel Brighiu 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The Budapest, Hungary native's next test will be Colin Hoover of Texas A&M, who took out 6th-seeded Alex Stamchev of Auburn in the round of 32.
Boilermaker singles competitors, Aaron Dujovne and Mark Kovacs, lost their first round main draw match, but later defeated their opponents in the consolation draw. Dujovne fell to Texas A&M's Alberto Bautista 6-3, 6-3. He then faced Santiago Centeno of Texas Christian and overcame the Horned Frog, 7-5, 6-4. The Santiago, Chile freshman sees hometown boy Sergio Ramirez of Baylor on Saturday. Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) was outlasted by his main draw opponent John Collins of Maryland, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. He later took out Oklahoma State's Ilija Martinoski after a third set tiebreaker, 1-6, 6-2, (10-2). His next opponent is 7th-seeded Alexey Grigorov from Texas A&M.
The doubles courts did not treat the Boilermakers as well. Dujovne and Krocsko were defeated by Jonathon Chang and Phillip Seifert of Rice 8-6. Likewise, Kovacs and Tatarczyk could not manage Oklahoma State's 8th-seeded pair Aleksey Bessenov and Rifat Biktyakov, 8-4.
Action will continue Saturday when the Boilermakers continue on in singles draws. The tournament consists of two 64-player singles A and B draws, as well as a 32-team doubles A draw and a 16-team doubles B draw. Consolation brackets for singles are being played.
