OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - The Purdue men's golf team recorded a total of 285 (+5) on Saturday to move into ninth place at the Olympia Field/Fighting Illini Invitational after 36 holes of play.
One of just six teams within five strokes of par in the second round, the Boilermakers own a total of 576 (+16) heading into Sunday's final round. Purdue moved four spots up the leader board on Saturday after finishing the opening round in the 13th position.
Purdue was once again paced by freshman Adam Schenk, who played Saturday's round at level-par 70 to move his total to 141 (+1) for the tournament. The Vincennes, Ind., native countered two bogeys with a pair of birdies in the second round, and will stand in a tie for 12th when final-round action gets under way.
Senior Erich Johnston carded the Boilers' second-best round on Saturday, rebounding from a 78 on day one to fire a one-over 71 in the second round. Johnston's total of 149 (+9) placed him a tie for 56th place after Saturday's play.
For the second day in a row, junior Tyler Duncan and sophomore Henry Plager tallied identical scores, each shooting a two-over 72 to bring their totals to 146 (+6) and earn shares of 36th place. Senior Nakarintra Ratanakul rounded out a strong day for the Boilermakers with a 73 (+3) to bring his total to 145 (+5) and enter into a 28th-place tie.
The Boilermakers will be represented in each of the first five groups on the first tee on Sunday when the final round of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational commences at 9 p.m. ET. Live results will be available at golfstat.com.
