WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sophomore Ariel Turner racked up a match-high 17 kills and rounded out her effort with 11 digs as Purdue dispatched the Duquesne Dukes 3-0 to start the Active Ankle Challenge Friday morning.
Turner more than doubled the offensive output of any other player in the match, with 17 kills in 40 swings. Redshirt freshman Catherine Rebarchak and junior Tiffany Fisher each added eight kills to the team's tally. Senior setter Jaclyn Hart managed five putaways while running the offense the first two sets.
Defensively, libero Carly Cramer pulled up 14 digs, while Turner and junior Emily Ehlers each contributed 11 as Purdue held the Dukes to a .071 hitting effort in the match. Cramer also served up two aces, while Turner added one. At the net, Fisher paced the team with five blocks, while Turner, Rebarchak and senior Kristen Arthurs each were credited with three stuffs.
Purdue breezed through the first set en route to a 25-10 win. Fisher led the Boilermaker effort in the stanza with six kills in seven swings, while Hart picked up four of her kills in the set. After giving up the first point in the set, Purdue scored the next four, including putaways by Arthurs, Fisher and Rebarchak. The Boilermakers went on to lead 12-4 after back-to-back kills by Hart, and boosted their advantage to 14 points at 22-8 after an ace by Cramer and a block by Turner and Fisher. A net violation slowed the team temporarily but kills by Turner and Fisher put Purdue on the hill at 24-9. Hart issued the final blow. Purdue posted a stellar .593 hitting effort in the set.
Turner accounted for eight of Purdue's 14 kills in the team's 25-13 Set 2 win. A pair of Turner putaways and another by Fisher put Purdue up 3-1 early, but the Dukes tied the score at three, four and seven, before the Boilermakers pulled away. A pair of blocks combining Arthurs with redshirt freshman Katie Griffin and Rebarchak respectively held pushed the Purdue lead to four points at 11-7. A kill by Hart made it a six-point game at 17-11 and prompted a Duquesne timeout. The Dukes managed the first point out of the break, but Purdue countered with seven straight to go up 24-12. Turner posted two kills and an ace in the rally, while rookie Elena Perri pounded down an overpass. A Duke putaway held off the Boilermakers' first shot at the stanza, but Perri closed the door at 25-13.
The Dukes challenged the Boilermakers coming out of intermission, scoring the first four of the first five points in the third set. Purdue countered with four points of its own, two on Turner kills and another on a Rebarchak putaway. The Dukes regained the lead at 7-6 and stretched the margin to three at 11-8. Points by Rebarchak and Turner and a block by Turner and Fisher helped Purdue into a 12-12 tie. Another Turner/Fisher combo stuff put the Boilermakers ahead at 14-13. Duquesne scored three of the next four to go up 16-15. Kills by Fisher and Turner put Purdue back on top, but the Dukes used a kill and a Boilermaker miscue to take an 18-17 advantage. The Boilermakers managed four straight to regain control and take a lead which it would not relinquish. A kill by Arthurs put Purdue up three at 21-18, but Duquesne charged back to tie it up at 22. A Rebarchak kill and back-to-back Duke hitting error sealed the Boilermaker sweep. Turner racked up seven kills in the final stanza, while Rebarchak tacked on five.
