COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Purdue baseball team eliminated its second team from the Big Ten Tournament before falling to a familiar foe in the league tournament and finding itself on the outside looking in a doubleheader action on Friday.
The Boilers pounded out 15 runs on 16 hits to oust rival Indiana from the tournament, 15-5, but a seven-run first inning to Iowa was too much to overcome and sent them to their fifth loss to the Hawkeyes in the span of the week to end their tournament run and the 2010 season. Purdue finished the season 33-24 overall, 12-12 during the Big Ten regular season and 2-2 in the conference tournament.
Game 1 - vs. Indiana
The Boilers jumped out to a 3-1 after three innings and added one in the fourth, four in each the fifth and eighth before tacking on three in the ninth, and senior Drew Wurdack tossed 6 2/3 solid innings to send the Hoosiers packing.
Drew Madia, playing in his penultimate game in a Boilermaker uniform, reached base in all six plate appearances by finishing 3 for 3 with a single, a double, his team-leading ninth home run of the season, three runs scored and three RBIs, all while tying the Big Ten Tournament record with three walks. His two-run blast in the third helped stake the Boilers to an early three-run edge.
Freshman teammate Kevin Plawecki, a 2010 All-Big Ten Freshman honoree, chipped in by going 3 for 6 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored, while classmate Cameron Perkins had three hits, including his team-leading 17th double of year, and two RBIs. Sophomore Ryan Bridges, who finished the game 2 for 6, scored three times in the contest.
Wurdack (6-4), making his final start for the Boilermakers, limited the high-powered Hoosier offense to just five runs, three earned, on 10 hits over 6 2/3 innings of work. He struck out six and walked two while earning his sixth victory of the year.
Reliever Brad Schreiber, another All-Big Ten Freshman for the Boilers, picked up his second career save with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of work out of the bullpen.
IU starter Matt Carr (3-2) was charged with the loss after allowing eight runs on five hits in four innings of work. The Hoosier bullpen didn't fare any better as reliever Chris Squires was touched up for four runs on eight hits in four innings and Casey Smith for three runs on three hits in one inning.
Game 2 - Iowa
The Hawkeyes proved to be the hardest nut to crack for the Boilermakers this season. A seven-run first inning off of two different Purdue pitchers sent the Boilermakers to a fifth straight loss to Iowa dating back to last weekend's regular season final series in Iowa City.
Iowa plated six runs on three hits and a walk off of senior starter Matt Jansen and got to Schreiber, who had just finished wrapping up the IU victory 45-minutes earlier, for another run on two hits and a walk. Each pitcher managed to record an out before being lifted.
Senior Kevin Cahill, also pitching in his final game as Boilermaker, settled things down and combined with sophomore Joe Haase and senior classmate Connor Sestak to limit the Hawkeyes to just a single run over the next 8 1/3 innings. Cahill allowed just one hit and struck out two over 2 1/3 innings, Haase a lone run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings and Sestak closed out his final Purdue appearance by recording the final two out in the ninth.
The Boilermaker offense rapped out 12 hits to Iowa's nine in the game, but couldn't convert the discrepancy into runs. Perkins, who finished his rookie season hitting .338 with a Purdue freshman record 17 doubles, eight home runs and 34 RBIs, led the way at the plate by going 3 for 4 with a run scored.
Senior Jonathan Lilly, who hit .500 with eight runs scored in Purdue's four games in the league tournament, finished the Iowa game 2 for 4 with a run scored and an outstanding leaping catch in right.
The Boilermakers said "Farewell, and good luck" to the following 10 seniors after the loss: Barret Arthur, Matt Bischoff, Cahill, Jansen, Lilly, Madia, Jon Moore, Overmyer, Sestak and Wurdack.
