Game 2 Final Stats
IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Purdue baseball dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Iowa on Friday, falling 7-2 in the opener and 5-1 in the nightcap. The twin losses moved Purdue to 31-21 overall and into a murky Big Ten Tournament chase at 12-11. Iowa improved its league tournament stock with the sweep, improving to 26-26 for the year and into a tie with Purdue In the league standings at 12-11.
Game 1
The Boilermaker offense struggled to get on track in the game off of Hippen, going down in order in five of its nine trips to the plate. Cameron Perkins scored both of Purdue's runs after doubling, his team-leading 16th two-bagger of the year, and coming home on a two-out single by Nick Overmyer in the second, and then tallying a run in the ninth on a Jonathan Lilly base hit.
Kevin Plawecki was the lone Purdue batter with multiple hits, finishing 2 for 3.
The Iowa offense, which had just 22 home runs for the year, hit three against Boilermaker pitching in the game.
Bischoff (9-2), who was 6-0 for the year in Big Ten games heading into the contest, allowed a solo homer to Trevor Willis in the third and another to Kurtis Muller to help the Hawkeyes overcome the early 1-0 deficit.
Iowa added two more runs off of Bischoff in the seventh on a RBI single by Zach McCool and a sacrifice fly by Mike McQuillan, before tacking on three more on Willis's second shot of the game off of reliever Matt Jansen in eighth.
The loss marked the first defeat in a three-game conference opener this season.
Game 2
The Boilermaker offensive woes continued in the nightcap as a Cameron Perkins' solo home run in the fourth inning accounted for all of the Purdue scoring. Perkins, who scored all three of Purdue's runs in the doubleheader, finished the second game 3 for 4 with his eighth fence-buster of the season.
Iowa opened the scoring in the third, plating three runs off of Purdue starter Calvin Gunter (1-2), and answered Perkins' solo home run with single runs in the sixth and eighth off of the Purdue bullpen to cap off the sweep.
Iowa starter Nick Brown (5-5) picked up the win in 6 2/3 innings of work. The right-hander scattered seven Purdue hits while striking out four and walking two.
Reliever Zach Robinson picked up his first save of the year with 2 1/3 shutout innings out of the pen. He allowed just a single hit and finished with three strikeouts and no walks.
Purdue will attempt to salvage one win and earn its way into the Big Ten Tournament in the series and regular season finale on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. with right-hander Drew Wurdack the starter on the mound for the Boilermakers.
