WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue baseball team split a Big Ten doubleheader with visiting Northwestern on a historic Saturday at Lambert Field.
Matt Bischoff became Purdue's all-time strikeout leader and Jon Moore pulled off a straight steal of home as the Boilers took the front end of the double dip, 2-1, but the Wildcats rallied for three runs on four hits in the fourth to hold off Purdue, 7-5, in the second contest to earn a split.
Game 1
Bischoff, who needed eight strikeouts to move past Chris Bloomer for the top spot on the career Ks list, punched out 10 NU hitters over eight shutout innings. He tied Bloomer's fallen mark of 257 Ks on a swinging strikeout of Arby Fields in the fifth inning, one of three strikeouts by the Wildcat center fielder in the game, and became Purdue's all-time leader on a swing and a miss by Trevor Stevens in the sixth.
Bischoff (6-1), who has struck out 10 or more hitters in four of his eight starts this season, picked up his team-leading sixth win of the year. He scattered seven hits and recorded at least one strikeout in seven of his eight innings of work. Bloomer's previous record had held up as the high water mark at Purdue since 1997.
Reliever Drew Wurdack was victimized by a Purdue error in the ninth, which allowed an unearned run to score, but the right-hander limited the damage to just the lone run to earn his second save of the year and preserve Bischoff's historic win.
Offensively, Purdue scrapped across single runs in the third and fifth off of NU starter Eric Jokisch.
Eric Charles plated Payton Bieker on a single to put the Boilers up 1-0 in the third before Moore recorded a Doug Schreiber-era first with a straight steal of home in the fifth.
The center fielder led off the frame with a single, advanced to second on a Tyler Spillner base hit in the following at bat and Eric Charles pushed the pair to second and third on a ground out to second.
With Cameron Perkins at the plate and Jokisch working out of the wind up, Moore broke for home and slid under the tag of catcher Chad Noble for what proved to be the game-winning run on the straight steal.
NU's Jokisch (3-5) was charged with a hard-luck loss despite tossing a complete game. The Wildcat lefty allowed both runs on seven hits and two walks. He struck out three.
Game 2
Tied 1-1 after three innings, Northwestern plated three runs on four hits in the top of the fourth and tacked on single runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth to snap Purdue's longest winning streak since 2001 in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Boilers pulled within in a single run in the eighth on a Kevin Plawecki sacrifice fly and a Drew Madia solo home run, his sixth of the year, but Northwestern took advantage of a Boilermaker error in the top of the ninth and reliever Paul Snieder worked a perfect bottom of the frame to nail down his eighth save.
NU's Hamilton Wise drove in a pair of runs in the game-changing fourth and Chad Noble, Chris Lashmet and Trevor Stevens all paired hits for the Wildcats in the win.
The Boilers got two-hit games from Cameron Perkins and Nick Overmyer in the loss. Perkins scored twice in the contest and five different Purdue players drove in runs.
NU reliever Francis Brooke (4-3) picked up the win with 4 1/3 innings of work out of the bullpen. The right-hander allowed two runs on two hits before ceding the mound to Snieder in the ninth.
Purdue's Matt Morgan (3-2) was charged with the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits in six innings of work. He struck out seven and walked two.
