MADISON, Wis. - The Boilermaker bats managed just one hit and stranded three of its five base runners, in a 3-0 loss to Wisconsin on Saturday.
The Badgers posted three runs on six hits. Senior Ashley Barr supplied Purdue's only hit with a bunt single in the third.
Letty Olivarez (7-18) garnered the win for UW, while junior Suzie Rzegocki (15-17) struck out five in the losing bid for Purdue.
The Badgers combined a one-out walk and a double to the wall for a run in the first. Whitney Massey drew the walk, while Molly Spence supplied the two-out RBI double to right.
Barr gave Purdue its first base runner with a leadoff single in the third, but the Boilermakers could not capitalize.
Wisconsin tacked on another run with three hits in the third. A single and a sacrifice put a runner in scoring position for Shannel Blackshear, who sent a single up the middle to make it 2-0. Another single followed, but Rzegocki struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Senior Liz Allum reached on a two-out free pass in the fourth, but was left stranded.
Purdue threatened in the fifth, putting two on with two outs, but could not manage a run. Rzegocki walked to start the stanza, but was out the following play as a fielder's choice put junior Shelby Krammer aboard. Freshman Kristen Allen joined Krammer with a two-out walk, but a pop up on the infield prevented the Boilermakers from snapping the shutout.
The Badgers made it 3-0 with a run on a pair of singles in the fifth. Massey singled and went to second on a wild pitch, before scoring on Blackshear's single up the middle.
The Boilermakers went down in order in the sixth and seventh to give Wisconsin its first conference win of the year.
Purdue will look to even the series when the teams face off again at 1 p.m. Sunday.
