NORMAL, Ill. - Right-hander Drew Wurdack struck out seven hitters over four solid innings, the Purdue bullpen allowed just one run on two hits over the final five innings and the Boilermaker offense rapped out 13 hits, including five doubles and back-to-back home runs, in an 11-3 win over Illinois State at Duffy Bass Field on Wednesday.
Wurdack (3-2), who picked up the victory in a limited start, retired five of his seven strikeout victims on called third strikes. The senior allowed just two runs on four hits before ceding the mound after he reached his pitch count limit.
Offensively, the Redbirds opened the scoring in the first, getting a two-out double from Ty Wiesmeyer and an RBI single from Ryan Court to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
Drew Madia and Kevin Plawecki answered in the second with consecutive long balls to open the frame. The solo shots were the third and fifth of the season for each player, respectively, and marked the third time this season that Purdue has hit back-to-back jacks.
Jon Moore tacked on a third run in the second with an RBI ground out that scored Cameron Perkins from third.
The Boilers broke the contest open in the fourth, plating four runs on four hits, including a two-run double from Nick Overmyer, a run-scoring two-bagger from Tyler Spillner and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Eric Charles to make it 7-1 Purdue.
A two-run double by Barret Arthur and another run-scoring single by Spillner led to three more runs in the sixth and a 10-2 Boiler edge, and a RBI double off the bat of pinch hitter Ryan Bridges in the eighth capped off the scoring.
Individually Overmyer led the way, finishing the contest 3 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Perkins chipped in with a pair of hits, three runs scored and two stolen bases and Plawecki went 2 for 3 with the solo home run and two runs scored.
Purdue returns to Big Ten action this weekend when it hosts Penn State for a trio of games at Lambert Field. First pitch for the series opener on Friday is scheduled for 4 p.m. with Boilermaker ace Matt Bischoff on the mound.
