WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue baseball team took advantage of two Ball State errors to plate seven runs in the fourth inning and went on to a 10-5 win over the Cardinals at Lambert Field on Tuesday. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak and improved the Boilermakers to 16-14 for the year.
With game tied 3-3, Purdue sent 12 hitters to the plate in the fourth and got run-scoring hits from Angelo Cianfrocco, Cameron Perkins and Nick Overmyer in the frame. A pair of throwing miscues by BSU first baseman Ian Nielsen and second baseman Mitch Widau extended the inning six hitters longer and led to six of the seven runs going into the scorebook unearned.
Led by Barret Arthur and Kevin Plawecki at the plate, Purdue rapped out 13 hits in the contest. Arthur and Plawecki each finished 3 for 5, with the former driving in one and scoring three times and the latter collecting his 10th double of the season, two RBIs and a run scored.
Overmyer chipped in by going 2 for 4 with an RBI, and senior classmate Drew Madia drove in a pair of runs and finished 1 for 4 with a run scored.
In a designated limited start, left-hander Pat Gannon (3-1) picked up his third win of the year. The freshman southpaw allowed five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. Relievers Sean Collins and Matt Jansen combined to toss 4 2/3 shutout innings to wrap up the victory.
BSU reliever Seth Hobbs (2-1) was charge with the hard-luck loss after allowing seven runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits in two innings of work.
Purdue will return to action on Wednesday when it heads to Normal, Ill., for a nonconference matchup with Illinois State. The Redbirds defeated the Boilermakers 5-2 at Lambert Field earlier this season. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. ET with right-hander Drew Wurdack making the start for Purdue.
