IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Boilermaker softball team captured a series split with the Iowa Hawkeyes, posting a 2-0 victory at Pearl Field on Sunday. Junior Suzie Rzegocki struck out seven in the complete-game win and the offense supplied two unearned runs in the second to help her to the victory.
Purdue racked up two runs on three hits, including an RBI triple by senior Ashley Barr, while allowing the Hawkeyes just four hits in the contest. Chelsea Lyon (9-7) was saddled with the loss for Iowa.
The Hawkeyes loaded the bases with two outs in the first on a hit by pitch, a single and a walk, but came up empty as a fielder's choice play capped the inning.
The Boilermakers jumped on Lyon for two runs on two hits and an error in the second. Senior Jenna Alexander reached on a two-base throwing error by the third baseman to start the inning. A sacrifice pushed her to third. Barr came to the plate with two outs and lifted a triple into deep left center, grabbing Purdue the lead and an RBI for herself. Junior Shelby Krammer made it 2-0 Boilers with a single to left. A walk put senior Liz Allum aboard, but a strikeout stranded two at inning's end.
Freshman Maia Monchek sent a one-out single into left field in the third and was sacrificed over to second, but Purdue could not bring her around to score.
Iowa wasted a leadoff double in the fourth as a sacrifice and two strikeouts accounted for the outs.
Purdue went down in order in the final three innings, but led 2-0 entering the final stanza.
The Hawkeyes managed a two-out infield single by Taylor Leichsenring in the seventh, but a grounder to second base sealed the Boilermaker victory.
