WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue baseball team swept its doubleheader with Chicago State on Saturday, blanking the Cougars 10-0 in the opener and earning 6-1 victory in the game two. The sweep improved Purdue 11-9 for the year, while CSU dropped to 1-11.
Combined, Purdue collected 26 hits, including four doubles, three triples and pair of home runs, while limiting Chicago State to just seven hits and one run in the doubleheader sweep.
Game One
Matt Jansen and Robert Ramer teamed up to blank the Cougars on just four hits in a 10-0 Purdue victory. The left-right combo retired the side in order in five of their nine innings of work and twice stranded runners at third base. It marked the second shutout of the season thrown by the Purdue pitching staff (also 3-0 against Le Moyne on March 12).
Jansen (2-1) earned his second win of the year by tossing six shutout innings. The senior southpaw allowed just three hits and three walks while striking out four.
Ramer took over in the seventh and tallied his first save by preserving the whitewashing over the final three innings of the contest.
Offensively, the Boilermakers rapped out 14 hits in the contest, including a double, two triples and a pair of home runs.
Individually, Tyler Spillner and Cameron Perkins both finished 3 for 5. Spillner hit both of Purdue's triples in the game, drove in a run and scored twice, while Perkins hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot to left in the eighth inning, drove in two runs and scored twice as well.
Kevin Plawecki (2 for 5, RBIs, 2 R), Drew Madia (2 for 5, 2 RBIs, 2 R) and Barrett Serrato (2 for 4, 2 RBIs) all paired hits for Purdue in the win. Plawecki smacked his first collegiate home run in the sixth inning.
Leading 1-0 after four innings, the Boilers plated three runs on three hits and a CSU error in the fifth and broke the contest open with five runs on five hits in the sixth.
Game Two
Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, Ryan Bridges delivered a two-run double to put the Boilermakers on the scoreboard and into the lead for good.
The Boilers took advantage of a CSU fielding miscue later in the fourth to push the advantage to 3-0, tacked on two more runs in the seventh on RBI doubles by Jon Moore and Brad Schreiber and capped off the day with a single run on a Tyler Spillner sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Right-hander Matt Morgan (2-0) picked up his second win of the season with seven solid innings of work. The junior allowed just one run on three hits. He struck out three and walked three.
Reliever Joe Haase took over in the eighth and tossed two scoreless innings to secure the victory.
All nine Purdue starters finished with at least one hit and six different players came around to score for the Boilers.
Bridges (2 for 4, 2B, 2 RBI, R), Barrett Serrato (2 fof 3) and Nick Overmyer (2 for 4) each finished with two hits. Spillner, who hit two triples in the opener of the doubleheader, added his third three-bagger of the day in seventh.
Purdue will look for a four-game series sweep over Chicago State in a single contest scheduled for noon on Sunday.
