WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue rapped out a season-high 20 hits in a 19-1 victory over visiting Chicago State at Lambert Field on Friday. The 18-run win in the series opener of a four-game set bumped the Boilermakers back to an even 9-9 on the season, while the Cougars dropped to 1-9 with the loss.
Twelve of the 14 Purdue players that recorded an at bat in the contest collected at least one hit, including eight of the nine starters, nine different players drove in at least one run and 11 different players came around to score at least once.
Leading 2-0 after two and half innings, the Boilers sent 13 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the third inning and scored nine runs on nine hits in the frame. Freshman Angelo Cianfrocco's first collegiate home run, a three-run shot to right, highlighted the inning and Tyler Spillner added two more RBIs in the third on one of his three singles in the game.
The Boilermakers tacked on four runs in both the seventh and eighth to win going away.
Individually, Cameron Perkins posted a perfect day at the plate, going 4 for 4 with two doubles, a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Spillner finished 3 for 4 with a two RBIs and a run scored, Drew Madia went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored and Nick Overmyer chipped in by finishing 2 for 4 with three runs scored.
Stephen Talbott, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in seventh took advantage of his opportunity with a pair of hits in two at bats and scoring two runs.
Left-hander Pat Gannon (2-1), making his first collegiate start, picked up his second victory of the season after allowing an unearned run on five hits in six innings of work. The freshman southpaw struck out three and walked none.
CSU starter James Tucker (0-4) was charged with the loss after allowing 11 runs on 11 hits in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out one, walked three and hit one batter.
Purdue and Chicago State will meet up for a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for noon in the opener of the twin bill.
