WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships on Sunday inside the Boilermaker Aquatic Center with five men and two women headed to their respective NCAA Championships.
"I'm proud of the team," head diving coach Adam Soldati said. "They did a great job and fought all the way to the end. Now the real work begins."
Sophomore David Boudia put an exclamation on Purdue's showing in the meet as he broke his second facility record Sunday and clinched the zone's number-one bid. The two-time defending Big Ten platform champion and last year's NCAA winner in the event took top honors Sunday with 1,014.60 points between his two six-dive lists. In his second list, Boudia scored 538.15 points to break the facility and program records of 533.60 he set at last year's Big Ten Championships. The Noblesville, Ind., native was awarded perfect 10s by all seven judges on his fourth dive of the second list, a reverse three-and-a-half somersault tuck. Boudia started the meet with a facility- and program-record score of 507.40 in his second list from the 3-meter on Friday.
"This competition was very successful for Purdue diving," Boudia said. "It says a lot that we got five divers from the men's side into the NCAA Championships. We look forward to going to Columbus in two weeks and competing there. After Big Tens I took a little bit of a break to rest and prepare myself for the next two meets. We took this meet as a training competition, so I went into it with the mindset of just going through practice and it paid off."
Junior Danny Cox and senior Kyle Mitrione ballooned the Boilermakers' participant total in the men's NCAA Championships with their performances Sunday. Cox finished third in the platform after scoring 821.95 points, while Mitrione placed sixth by putting 706.50 points on the board. When the individual bids were handed out, both divers were awarded spots due to carries in other events.
Juniors J.P. Perez and David Colturi, who had already clinched berths in the national championship meet earlier in the weekend, finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the platform. Perez scored 762.40 points with his two lists, and Colturi totaled 707.20 between his 12 dives.
Junior Kara Cook led the Purdue women in the platform competition as she placed seventh in the event with her 489.70-point total. Sophomore Casey Matthews and junior Erin Mertz, who earlier this weekend clinched their spots in the NCAA Championships, finished eighth and 10th, respectively, Sunday.
Five of the nine male representatives from Zone C will be wearing the Old Gold and Black, and between both genders seven of 18 athletes advancing to the NCAA Championships train in West Lafayette. The women return to the same boards inside the Boilermaker Aquatic Center for the NCAA Championships, which begin Thursday. The men travel to Columbus, Ohio, for their national championship meet March 25-27.
