WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's and women's swimming and diving teams each added participants to their respective NCAA Championships on Friday inside the Boilermaker Aquatic Center during day one of the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships.
"We had a great day today," head diving coach Adam Soldati said. "But, we need to keep ourselves grounded. We have a lot of work to do over the next couple of days."
On the men's side, sophomore David Boudia and junior J.P. Perez clinched their trips to the NCAA Championships in two weeks, while junior Erin Mertz punched a ticket to the women's national championship meet next week.
Boudia earned his berth by winning the 3-meter competition. The defending NCAA champion in the event put 849.70 points on the board between his two six-dive lists to better the field of 34 divers. Perez was the next finisher in the event as he scored 792.35 to etch his named in the NCAA field for the first time as a Boilermaker.
Mertz dove to her bid by defeating the field of 47 competitors in the 1-meter. The Omaha, Neb., native booked a return trip to the national championship meet with her score of 588.50 points. Mertz looks for her second consecutive All-America honor after placing seventh from the lowest springboard at last year's NCAA Championships.
In addition to the qualifiers, Purdue had six more competitors. Senior Kyle Mitrione ended up sixth in the 3-meter with his score of 730.15, while junior David Colturi took the next spot by scoring 723.35. Freshman Jimmy Page scored 656.20 points to finish 15th in his first NCAA Zone event, and junior Danny Cox was 17th with his total of 646.05.
Sophomore Casey Matthews finished sixth in the 1-meter competition after scoring 550.45 points. Junior Kara Cook, a 2008 All-American off the platform, posted the 24th-highest score in the preliminary round with her total of 236.70.
The NCAA Zone C Diving Championships continue Saturday. Action begins at 1 p.m. ET with the men contesting the 1-meter and the women on the 3-meter. Admission is free, and live video and live results can be found at purduesports.com.
