Sophomore Tyler Duncan and junior Nakarintra Ratanakul both posted red numbers and the Purdue men's golf team was two strokes under par as a group on Sunday to stand in a tie for sixth place after 18 holes of action at the Puerto Rico Classic.
The host team at Rio Mar Country Club, the Boilermakers posted a first-round 286 (-2) to complete the opening day of play deadlocked with Georgia and Kent State, just one stroke outside the top five. Oklahoma State, the nation's top-ranked team, leads the field after recording a total of 275 (-13) on Sunday.
Duncan, who played the par fours at two under on the day, hit the clubhouse in a tie for sixth place after posting a season-best 69 (-3) on Sunday. The performance was also the first round in red numbers this season for Duncan, who was one of seven players to record an eagle on the day. When play opens on Monday, Duncan will be one shot behind a group of players tied for third place, and four strokes off the lead pace.
The Boilermakers also got a season-best performance from Ratanakul, as his two-under 70 on Sunday matched the low single-round score that he had attained three times on the season prior to first-round action in Puerto Rico. Earning his second under-par round this season on the strength of an eagle and a -1 clip on par threes, Ratanakul stands in a tie for 14th place after 18 holes of play.
Junior Maximo Kopp fired a first-round 73 (+1) to finish Sunday's action in a tie for 41st place, while sophomore William Sjaichudin and junior Erich Johnston wrapped up the day in ties for 47th and 55th places, respectively, with scores of 74 (+2) and 75 (+3).
Oklahoma State's Kevin Tway holds the 18-hole lead with a seven-under 65 on Sunday, while Cody Gribble of Texas finished the day two strokes off the pace with an opening-round 67 (-5).
Monday's action will commence with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. ET, with The Boilermakers will get their round under way on holes 5-7. Daily recaps and results from the Puerto Rico Classic will be posted at purduesports.com.
