TEMPE, Ariz. - The Boilermaker softball team suffered its second one-run loss of the weekend at the Kajikawa Classic on Saturday. Purdue fell to Portland State 3-2 in a game which saw all three Viking runs chalked up as unearned.

PSU scored three runs on three hits and a Purdue error, while the Boilermakers managed two runs on six hits. Six different players contributed hits to the Purdue tally.

Junior Suzie Rzegocki struck out five in the loss, while Anna Bertrand moved to 1-1 on the year with the PSU victory.

Senior Liane Horiuchi led off the Purdue offensive effort with a single to left center. She then stole second and went to third on a grounder, but was left stranded by a pop up and caught foul ball.

The Vikings managed three unearned runs in the second inning. A hit by pitch, single and walk loaded the bases with two outs. A fielding error by the third baseman allowed one run to come in. A single up the right field line drove in two, but the batter wound up at second after an obstruction call. A pop up ended the scoring threat.

The Boilermakers got two runs back on a Maia Monchek home run in the third. The rookie jacked the shot to right center, driving in Horiuchi, who walked and stole second.

Purdue was unable to capitalize on a fourth-inning single through the left side by sophomore Katie Hackney, as a double play wrapped up the stanza.

The Boilermakers had another scoring opportunity in the sixth as junior Shelby Krammer doubled to left field. Pinch runner Aimee Gingerich advanced to third on a ground out, but a strikeout kept Purdue from tying the score.

Freshman Erika Petruzzi drew a leadoff walk in the seventh. A two-out bunt single by Molly Garst pushed pinch runner Ashley Barr to second, but both were left stranded by a strikeout.

The Boilermakers (0-3) return to action at 6:30 p.m. ET when they take on Cal State Northridge.
