Men's Golf Downs Top-Seeded Illinois In First Round Of Match Play Championship

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - The Big Ten Match Play Championship opened with a bang in Coral Springs, Fla., on Friday, as the Purdue men's golf team defeated top-seeded and 11th-ranked Illinois by a count of 3.5-2.5 at Herron Bay Golf Club.

Sophomore William Sjaichudin earned the Boilermakers' most decisive victory of the match, toppling Luke Guthrie by a count of 5&3. Juniors Nakarintra Ratanakul (3&2) and David Gersztein (2&1) also contributed outright victories, while junior Maximo Kopp halved his match to add a half point to the Purdue total.

The Boilers will square off with Minnesota, a 3.5-2.5 winner over Indiana in the morning session, in semifinal action on Saturday at 7 a.m. ET. The winner will earn a spot in Saturday afternoon's final.
