TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 6 Arizona proved too strong for the Boilermaker softball team Friday night, issuing Purdue a 10-0 loss.
The Wildcats scored 10 runs on nine hits and three errors, while Purdue managed just one hit. Junior Shelby Krammer supplied the base knock.
Three Boilermaker pitchers got in on the action. Freshman Erika Petruzzi started the contest and issued three strikeouts in an inning and a third. Sophomore Katie Hackney tossed the next inning and two thirds, while rookie Julie Rice finished the contest. Kenzie Fowler struck out eight Purdue batters in the winning effort for Arizona.
A one-out error proved costly for the Boilermakers, as Arizona scored three runs, including two that were unearned, in the bottom of the first. Brittany Lastrapes was hit by a pitch and Lauren Schutzler reached on a bunt single. Stacie Chambers singled to right, but wound up at third as two runs scored on a fielding error by the right fielder. A dropped ball by the catcher on a fielder's choice throw to the plate accounted for the third score. Rookie Erika Petruzzi wrapped up the stanza with a pair of strikeouts.
The Wildcats tacked on seven runs on five hits in the second on a trio of home runs. Lastrapes, Chambers and Baillie Kirker supplied the hits. Chambers home run, however, was unearned as the Boilermaker third baseman dropped a foul ball on the previous pitch.
Krammer snapped the no-hitter with a one-out single up the middle in the third, but was left stranded at inning's end.
With one out and runners at the corners, first baseman Jenna Alexander pulled off the solo double play, snagging the liner and stepping on the bag to end the threat.
The Boilermakers posted their biggest offensive threat in the fourth, when freshman Maia Monchek reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and went to second on a wild pitch. Senior Jenna Alexander then joined her on base with a walk. Unfortunately, a double play kept Purdue from capitalizing.
Purdue returned the favor with a double-play of their own in the bottom of the inning, nullifying a walk and single.
Hackney drew a leadoff walk in the fifth and advanced to third on a pair of illegal pitches, but a pair of strikeouts and a ground out stranded her and wrapped up the contest.
The Boilermakers will regroup and return to action at 4:30 p.m. ET when they take on Portland State.
