#22 Purdue Picks Up One Win At Quad

The 22nd-ranked Purdue women's swimming and diving team completed the Big Ten Quad Duals on Saturday afternoon by earning one win and falling short in the other two matchups.

"We swam competitively today," head coach John Klinge said. "This meet was a good tune up for the Big Ten Championships."

Junior Ariel Martin provided Purdue its lone win of the second day after the Boilermakers won three events Friday evening. Martin finished the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 49.77 seconds to lead a sweep of the top-three places. She was followed immediately by sophomore Lauren Roth's 1:50.13 clocking and classmate Lisa Butler's 1:50.95 time. Martin also led Purdue in the 50 freestyle with her second-place, 23.21 showing in a race that featured freshman Lauren Nichols scoring in eighth place with her 24.03 clocking.

Junior Allie Smith recorded another runner-up finish for the Boilermakers as she stopped the clock in 55.71 to take second in the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Kristen Gilson finished 10th in 58.83, and classmate Sarah Dunleavy touched the wall in a season-best time of 1:01.10. Gilson led Purdue in the 400 IM with her ninth-place, 4:32.03 swim and was joined in the scoring by freshman Courtney Tumbush's 4:34.53 time that placed 11th. Dunleavy added a season-best time of 4:36.67 in the same race.

Smith, Jessica Davis, Martin and Butler began the day with a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay after the quartet completed the race in 1:43.38. Martin, Butler, Roth and Leah Henninger closed the meet with a runner-up finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:23.86.

Freshman Caitlin Hamilton, who broke the program record in the 1,000 freestyle last week, finished third in the event by touching the wall in 9:58.56. Sophomore Amy Gutwein also scored for the Boilermakers with her seventh-place, 10:22.11 finish.

Freshman Seraphina Van was the top-finishing Boilermaker in the 200 breaststroke with her fourth-place, 2:20.44 finish. Fellow freshman Megan Roach scored in 11th place by finishing in 2:25.93. Senior Christine Inman swam to a season-best time of 57.74 while finishing sixth in the 100 butterfly. She was joined in the scoring by junior Mary-Margaret Lopez, who touched the wall in 58.28 and placed 10th. Freshmen Nora Brolsma and Emily McIlrath scored season-best times of 58.39 and 58.52, respectively.

Purdue took down Illinois 198-122. No. 10 Minnesota grabbed a 173-147 win over the Boilermakers, while 17th-ranked Wisconsin claimed a 190-130 victory.

The Boilermakers concluded the regular season with a dual-meet record of 6-3 and recorded the program's highest win total since 2005-06. Purdue now turns its attention to the Big Ten Championships, which are scheduled to take place Feb. 17-20 inside the Boilermaker Aquatic Center.
